Know India’s favourite match day meal choices during ICC World Cup 2019

Indian fans were left heartbroken when Virat Kohli and his team failed to qualify for the World Cup 2019 finals scheduled for Sunday. However, fans cheered the Indian team throughout the series — on screen and at the table — by choosing a variety of Indian cuisine, says a latest survey by food delivery app Uber Eats. Advertising
Conducted between May 30 and July 11, the survey says that “India’s love for cricket is the only thing that fans love more besides the love for good food”. It adds, “across India, cricket enthusiasts were binge-eating on carbs while rooting for India with most orders for bread, followed by cooling off the pressure with ice-creams.”
Interestingly, fans opted to indulge in cheesy burgers during the most-awaited match — when India played against Pakistan — making it the most savoured dish of the day, followed by pizza. It also revealed that Chennai clocked in the most orders during the season, closely followed by Bangalore and Pune.
While the top food trend during the cricket season in Delhi, Jaipur, Indore, Kolkata, Pune, Lucknow was bread, it was samosa in Nagpur, and burger in Amritsar. Advertising
According to the survey, a resident of Indore, who was probably hosting a match-day gathering, placed the biggest order for 233 dishes including Paneer Biryani, Special Chicken Biryani and Kaju Biryani, while the smallest order was also placed by an eater from Indore for Tawa Roti at Rs 13 followed by a consumer in Chennai who ordered for a bottle of water to quench their thirst.
Following tradition, Indian fans ordered for desserts after the big wins, making ice creams the top sugar cravings during the World Cup season, followed by cakes and gulab jamuns.
The report also mentions that the platform received some unique requests when India lost its matches. One such request said: “Please send change of Rs 500 and also add 1 extra gulab jamun because today India lost the World Cup; I am a little bit in depression.”

That the New York City shares an enviable position across the world for its commitment to world cuisine is a common knowledge. It is also in the Big Apple that one gets to see a unique marrying of cultures through food. So no wonder then that this weekend a food mash up is happening.
If that hasn’t gotten you riveted yet, then hear this: The first ever Indian chef to win the US food reality show Chopped , Aarthi Sampath, is organizing a food pop up along with popular New York restaurateur Melba Wilson at Wilson’s eponymous eatery Melba’s.
Michelin starred chef Sampath, winner of the season 3 of Chopped in 2016, is also the winner of another hugely popular food show, Beat Bobby Flay last year. Currently the chef de cuisine at iconic Michelin starred eatery Junoon in the city, Sampath would bring along some of the most unique Indian flavors she grew up with.

Aptly titled as “Devi Pop Up”, perhaps as an ode to Sampath’s Indian roots and culture, the food fest would feature dishes such as Sampath’s famous chicken biryani that beat none other than Bobby Flay himself.
Chefs Sampath and Wilson describe the pop up as flavors of India meet the flava of Harlem, where Melba Wilson was born and grew up.
Also on the menu will be Melba’s favorite samosa and classic tikka masala, with a Harlem twist. There will also be collard greens and spinach saag – another Indian homey comfort food.

It’s one of my favourites too. I watched it as a kid so much that I broke the CD. I don’t really know when it’s coming to my country, and I haven’t decided yet. I am still not completely sure about the CG, and apparently they cut out Be Prepared, my favourite song 🙁 I don’t think my cats are very aware of my emotions. Still love them tho. At least they let me pet them, which is still a big step for a cat. In my country there aren’t many Mexican restaurants, and the existing ones are pretty expensive. Actually that goes for all foreign cuisines but nevermind. I really like Chinese and Japanese cuisine, and I have recently started to get into Indian. I have never really tried real Mexican food but I’d like to. I also like my grandmother’s cooking, which could be described as Middle Eastern I guess.

Vancouver is a foodie city with a lot of Asian influence, a very hip culture and a very unique and innovative taste. So I’m gonna take you on my top must try foods of Vancouver and where to find them!
Must Try Foods Vancouver Foods On my Vancouver food tour of filming Vancouver foods, I explore foods Vancouver is known for in fresh sustainable seafood, Asian food which have inspired re-known trends and Canadian foods with a Vancouver twist.
1. Sushi and Seafood Vancouver is known as the “sushi capital of North America” and famous California Sushi Roll ( crab, cucumber, avocado). Invented in 1971, by Hidekazu Tojo – a Canadian- opened his own restaurant in the city Tojos . You’ll find sushi rolls named after the city– from “ B.C roll ” (an homage to Vancouvers abundance of wild salmon) to “Victoria”. There are many sushi joints to explore. I had my sushi experience in Richmond (keep reading or watch my video). As a Pacific Northwest coastal city, Vancouver is proud of their sustainable and fresh catch, so seafood is fresh here.
2. Maple Syrup infused foods When in Canada, you’ll notice a lot of maple leaf syrup in souvenir shops. But maple syrup isn’t only for tourists- locals love it too. Maple syrup is one of the signature condiments of Vancouver and Canada. You’ll certainly find some foods inspired with maple syrup; however, they may not always leap out at you. 3. Candied Salmon Sticks Candied Salmon sticks are a tender jerky like stick that is candied either with sugar or maple syrup and it is a must try snack of Vancouver. As a Pacific Northwest coastal city, Vancouver is proud of their sustainable and fresh catch. Wild salmon is Vancouver’s most abundant stock. Where to find this: Granville Island Public Market, seafood section.
4. Asian Cuisine at Aberdeen Centre Aberdeen Centre i s a three-story, 180 store mall in Richmond with western and eastern stores. You’ll find Asian restaurants and shops like Tony Moly and Daiso. I couldn’t decide what I wanted to eat so I went to Aberdeen Centre food court to see what types of Asian cuisine it offered and there was a lot of options to choose from: Chinese to Japanese, Korean and Asian desserts (directory here ). There are 20 food stalls with food vendors covering various flavors from across Asia . I chose bubble tea with boom boom pearls from Bubble Waffle and a Vancouver roll from Kuroson. 5. Richmond Night Market Although this is not a food, Richmond Night market has to be mentioned here. Started in 2000 by entrepreneur Raymond Cheung , the Richmond Night Market has grown into one of the largest North American night market festivals. It occurs annually during the summer, bringing out the best in innovative, Asian-inspired fusion foods that will propel year round jaw-dropping instagram food shots. Follow the hashtag #VancouverFoodie. Even though it’s off-season, those Instagram photos are still floating around.
6. Japadog Ever tasted seaweed or bonito flakes on a hot dog? Well, how about plum sauce inspired dog, an avocado hotdog or one with salmon or kimchi? The Japadog is the Vancouver’s favorite Japanese hot dog, with different fixing reminiscent of your favorite Asian flavors. Each Japadog location sports something a little different. I was on an okonomiyaki mood, so I ordered a veggie dog (aka a vegetarian hot dog – the beauty of Vancouver is that they have vegetarian foods) flavored with okonomiyaki sauce, Japanese mayo with seaweed and bonito flakes. 7. Tim Hortons Tim Hortons is a ubiquitous coffee and donuts stop you can’t miss- it is literally EVERYWHERE! It’s actually more abundant than 7 Elevens. Popular with locals who call it “Timmie Hortons” or “Timmie’s” it’s like a Canadian Dunkin’Donuts but better. From quick breakfast pick-me-ups like english muffin with egg and sausage to donuts dripping with sweet flair… order yourself the local favorite- a Double Double (double cream, double sugar) coffee. 8. Salmon n’ Bannock A popular First Nations restaurant I wish I had time to look into is Salmon n’Bannock . The restaurant serves wild fish, game meat and bannock bread ( a flour and water type of bread). The menu is quite interesting sourcing foods locally and made with the indigenous palate in mind. 9. Tacofino Tacos Originating from a food truck, Tacofino has carried its taco food truck legacy into trendy and restaurants.
The Gastown Burrito Bar restaurant location has a large menu and at night it is packed with a buzzing and youthful Vancouverite crowd reminiscent of a Soho restaurant patrons. Light dimmed, music blaring, I almost mistook it for a bar. The tacos can range from simple to complex. I had the spinach and mushroom that looked like a vegetarian loaf.My friend Henry had the Pork El Pastor and the Fish tacos. I’ll let you watch the video to see the results. 10. Tacofino food truck Tacofino Blue food truck located in downtown/Broadway tech has a limited menu but its evident what the most popular tacos are- fish, chicken, pork and bahn (a tempura fried tofu). I like the no-nonsense atmosphere of the food truck best. Highly Recommended the fish taco– it is the juiciest batter-fried fish taco i’ve tried with wakame salad, lime juice, japanese mayo… it’s a symphony of flavors. It’s outta this world! 11. Poutine Canada is known for its poutine (fries, gravy and cheese). But at Pomme Frites in Downtown Granville street, poutine is taken to a Vancouverite level of asian infusion.
Frites Vancouver , has a varied and remarkable list of waffle sandwiches to poutine, ranging from pulled pork to kalbi and kimchi. They even have their own Vancouverite style of fries aptly named after its flavored toppings, such as Okonomi, kimchi, falafel and pad thai. Getting to Richmond: Aberdeen Station (25 minutes from downtown Waterfront Station). For traveler’s, Richmond is more like what Orange County is to Los Angeles than what Chinatown is to New York . Meaning, you’ll can’t just jump off the metro and wander around. It takes some Google research as its mostly suburban, with some popular streets with restaurants and malls.
Gastown Gastown is the oldest and most historic neighborhood of Vancouver, Gastown is where Vancouver first settlement was birthed, when Yorkshire seaman, Gassy Jack Deighton arrived to open the first saloon in the area. Today, Gastown is a mixture of hip boutiques, restaurants, pubs and galleries mixed with 1860s architecture, cobblestone streets. Old landmarks are still preserved and have plaques commemorating their historical value to the area. I had two meals at Taj Bengal Kolkata during my staycation and a breakfast, which was almost a brunch. While Manish restricted himself to his salads, I ordered my Kosha Mangsho, as Sujoy Gupta Executive Chef said that this is not in the menu but is provided on request. The Kosha Mangsho was, as the millennials call it- BAE . I rarely am happy with Kosha Mangsho in a restaurant as I have faced many bad experiences over the years but this was a dish of substance. I couldn’t have been happier with the flavour, colour and the taste of this kosha mangsho.
During this time, the Veg pizza arrived and by the time I could start on it, my companions were already raving about it. Thin crust with pesto, bocconcini cheese on top with rocket leaves and sunchoked tomatoes playing hide and seek was a beautiful flavour combination. This is a pizza which I don’t mind revisiting even if I am a diehard non-vegetarian.

This is Sujoy’s second stint at Taj Bengal. He is now the Executive chef but as I feel, much of the grooming of the Executive chef happened when he was managing Sonargaon. I fondly remember telling him that Sonargaon is to him like Eden Gardens is to Dada. The food has to be shown its due respect and so, I carried with myself a Pathan Suit for the occasion. Sonargaon Taj Bengal menu is an elaborate one. However, we were told that Sujoy had something exotic planned for us. Like the invincible pair of Ganguly and Sachin in Indian cricket, we started with two star dishes- Kakori Kebab and Machhli Gondhoraj. Making Kakori kebab is a tedious process which involves skill. The silken smooth coating and “melt in your mouth” kebabs are worth dying for. Kakori kebab Sujoy explained the process of making Kakori Kebabs in Sonargaon Taj Bengal Kolkata Lean meat is minced for 8 to 10 times. Lamb Kidney fat is added in the mince at a certain ratio. This is the key to smooth and silky kakori kebabs. 25 spices including khowa, cinnamon, rose petal, chiranji, kabab chini, saffron, cashew nut, are all made into a fine paste and strained for 4 to 5 times so that no grains left. This spice paste is then mixed with the meat along with additional saffron, smoked and then it’s left for a day, so that the spices blend in the meat. The scintillating opening pair mentioned above gave a good start to the dining innings. There was more to come. It was almost like a dream team. There was Daal Sonargaon (takes almost 12 hours to cook) and Gilafi Kulchha. This was my first experience of Gilafi Kulchha and one that will be memorable. The base was made with sourdough kulchha bread and on top, it was Shirmal dough. As I had a first bite, there was a sweetness which flirted, then there was the regular taste of the dough till it boomeranged and the sweet taste hit me in the end.
In the vegetarian menu, the star attractions were Dahi ka Kofta with a delicious stuffing of palak and Aloo Lal Mirch in a Cashew nut and onion gravy with yogurt and Kashmiri Lal Mirch. By the time I had reached these, I was still having a hangover of the Kakori Kebab. In the meantime, Nalli Nihari and Raan had made appearances. The meat literally fell off the bones and melted in our mouth. Cliché but true. Little did we know earlier that the meat for both these dishes are always procured from Marwar region of Rajasthan. I am a boring diner when it comes to breakfast. I follow a ritual of some bacon strips, some sausages and a double egg sunny side up. If in a better mood after this, then perhaps a poori sabzi or a masala dosa. Things you won’t find in my breakfast plate – fruits, corn flakes and fruit juices. After a great dinner the previous night, the breakfast had to be late and uncharacterizable laziness crawled in. By the time I reached Cal 27, it was almost 10.15 A.M. I was picking up food from the buffet counter like my own ritual and ordered for my sunny side up. On my way back, I found Simran, the wait staff carrying a fluffy omelette for someone else. I didn’t know the name. I am non-judgemental about eggs, so I requested her to change my order. Later Sujoy confirmed that this was an egg souffle omelette. Like the process of making a meringue, 4 egg whites are beaten to a peak. There cannot be any leftover egg white or liquid at the bottom. Finely chopped chilies are sautéed on the pan and the egg white is carefully poured into the frying pan without knocking out the air. It is cooked on a low flame and after a while, the egg is given 1 fold and the omelette is ready. On that particular day, it was Gujarati platter but like all great chefs, Sujoy had started reading minds. Within few seconds of being seated at the table, Sujoy sent a plateful of dreams. Sunday dream for any Bengali is Luchi. 4 perfectly done luchi with cholar daal, alur dom, chutney, mishti doi and some lonka bhaja completed the platter. Things got complicated from here. Like a lover split between two individuals, my attention oscillated between souffle omelette and the luchi but I almost ended both. As a part of the South Indian buffet, we also got a South Indian platter and the sambar was to die for. The Luchi platter and the South Indian platter are available on request.
