Stay like Portuguese at WelcomHeritage Hotel in Goa

If travelling was free you would never see me again!!! Wednesday, 20 March 2019 Stay like Portuguese at WelcomHeritage Hotel in Goa The colourful road of heritage Fontainhas colony which is an Instagrammer’s delight will make you forget beaches. The streets will welcome you with riots of colours– buttery yellows, maroon, emerald greens, pista green, mustard, plum, purple. Portugal designed houses, greenery, bougainvilleas will take one back in time. There are heritage hotels for travel buffs to experience the rich Portugal culture. One of them is Panjim Inn– an old world Goan hospitality for the discerning traveler with a desire to experience Goa’s History, Culture, Cuisine, and Art. Hidden among the narrow lanes of Goa’s heritage colony Fontainhas—this grand colonial homestay dates from early 1800. This old Goan colony dates back more than 150 years. The boutique homestay originally belongs to a Portugal family and now his great-grandson is looking after the property. The Panjim Inn, Goa’s first Heritage Hotel, is a 130-year-old Family mansion, owned and managed by the original Family and now a part of WelcomHeritage. Each 24 room has a wonderful old-charm with period furniture and family photos. Antique wooden furniture adds character and coziness. It’s basic but comfortable, perfect for a couple or a solo traveler, and is a good base to navigate the quaint neighbourhood. Original owners of the homestay In-house to the heritage hostelries is Gallery Gitanjali, a contemporary art gallery and completing the experience is The Verandah Restaurant, which takes you on a sussegado journey down memory lane to explore Goa’s cuisine. The Verandah Restaurant is located on the first floor. Overlooking a busy street corner the Verandah is a fine spot for a leisurely drink, perhaps the trademark farm brewed Goan Feni or a mocktail for the teetotaller. Supping good Goan food from this vantage point one can watch the locals go about their mundane pursuits. The Verandah restaurant serves a mix of Goan, Indian and Continental cuisine, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and cocktails but the Goan curries are special. Our popular dishes are Pork Sorpotel and SambarachiKodi (a typical Goan Prawn curry). For Dessert, we recommend the Portuguese Serradurra and Bebinca. Depending on workload, and when we are not busy guests are welcome to try their hand in the kitchen too. The same family runs beautiful Panjim Pousada across the road, an old Hindu house with nine rooms. Meanwhile, you can set out to explore Fontainhas after breakfast. Goa goes back many centuries in History and was once the Rome of the East. With its narrow winding streets, quaint bylanes and old heritage homes Fontainhas is a ride down to memory lane. So, next time when you are in Goa, do visit this homestay as many main beaches are near to this location. Private and international schools are very popular with expats and even though they are more expensive than public schools, the quality of education your children will receive will be well worth the fees.
Some international schools you could look into are the International School of Cape Town, American International School of Cape Town, and Reddam House Durbanville – all located in Cape Town. Look after your health
Being clued up about the country’s healthcare system and having access to the city’s healthcare facilities is important – especially when you’ve got a family to think about. One thing to note is that South Africa does not have a universal healthcare system, which means that those who use the public healthcare system will have to pay out of pocket fees based upon a patient’s income and number of children.
While South Africa boasts the highest standard of healthcare in Africa, the country’s public healthcare system suffers from a lack of funding, long waiting times, lack of staff and often substandard facilities. This is why many expats choose to look into private healthcare options so they can easily access private facilities, to receive a high standard of care as and when they need it. With more than 200 private hospitals across the country and plenty of reputable hospitals in Cape Town, expat families can feel very well supported.
When it comes to looking after your family’s mental health and well-being, there are also numerous facilities dedicated to mental health support across the Western Cape and in Cape Town itself. Embrace the outdoors
In South Africa, life is very much lived outdoors – and this is something your entire family can easily enjoy in Cape Town.
Surrounded by mountain ranges and stunning stretches of coastline, Cape Town is situated in a perfect location for leisure opportunities. So whether you fancy a day trip spent hiking up Table Mountain or an afternoon snorkelling at Long Beach, there are plenty of incredible outdoor activities to enjoy with the whole family.
If the picturesque landscape isn’t reason enough to venture outside, then the beautiful weather is sure to do the job! It’s well-known that weather has a substantial impact on our ability to get outside and play. When the weather is dismal and cold, people often lack the motivation to go outdoors and engage in recreational activities. Luckily, Cape Town boasts a sunny, warm climate, encouraging people to get out there and enjoy the sunshine.
South Africans, in general, are very passionate about being outside and being active, so if you want to join in the fun and live like the locals, embrace the outdoors! Dive into the culture
Cape Town is considered to be one of the most diverse cities in the world , due to being home to a high number of expats from all over the globe. If you and your family are moving from an English-speaking country, then you’re in luck – many people living in Cape Town speak English because it is the language of business, commerce and politics.
That said, Afrikaans and Xhosa are also popular languages in Cape Town. In fact, the country is home to eleven official languages including Afrikaans, English, Ndebele, Sotho, Sotho sa Leboa, Swati, Tsonga, Tswana, Venda, Xhosa and Zulu. Even the national anthem is made up of five different languages, which emphasises the truly multicultural and multilingual nature of the country.
With such a complex and beautiful culture, it may be a good idea to slowly but surely learn the country’s cultural background and ethnic make-up to gain a deeper understanding before you move there. Experience Cape Town cuisine
One exciting way to help you and your children experience the local culture is to sample the city’s delicious cuisine. Like Cape Town’s ethnic make-up, the cuisine reflects a diverse blend of African, European, Indian and Malay influences.
Due to the city’s ideal coastal location, Cape Town boasts a thriving seafood scene, with restaurants and markets selling fresh seafood – from crayfish (also known as ‘rock lobster’) and snoek, to smoked angelfish.
Many events and festivals across the Western Cape, as well as the country as a whole, are food- and wine oriented. Wine is a major part of South African culture, especially in the Western Cape where the majority of wineries are located. As such, you should definitely try and attend a wine festival or tour during the harvest seasons (you may want to leave the kids at home for this one though!).
One event you can definitely enjoy as a family is a traditional South African braai. Similar to a barbecue, but on a much larger scale, a braai is a social event in which local communities gather together to share and enjoy food. Meat is the main event. Usually lamb, beef, pork or chicken, the meat is traditionally cooked on an open wood fire outdoors and shared among family, friends and neighbours.
From enjoying a local braai and embracing the outdoors, to scouting out schooling options and gaining access to the country’s healthcare system, there are plenty of ways expat families can make the move to Cape Town an easy and enjoyable experience. Masterchef celebrates vegan cuisine in first ever plant-based episode

Masterchef celebrates vegan cuisine in first ever plant-based episode
Masterchef celebrates vegan food with its first ever episode dedicated to plant-based cuisine.
Veganism might be the word on everyone’s lips at the moment, but whilst supermarkets and brands are competing with each other to release new vegan products and ranges, television cookery shows have been less quick to embrace the fast-growing trend towards meat-free eating.
The Great British Bake Off hit the headlines last year when it hosted its first ever entirely vegan episode celebrating vegan baking, and now Masterchef is following their lead as it airs its first ever episode dedicated to plant-based cuisine.
The episode which aired on BBC 1 on Monday (20th March), challenged the contestants to create a dish free from animal products for a place in the semi-final and featured Michelin-star guest chef and vegan Alexis Gauthier .
Gauthier began to ditch animal products in 2016 following protests by PETA, which ultimately led to him deciding to go vegan. The two-star Michelin chef later revealed plans to make his restaurant 100 per cent vegan in line with his own ethical beliefs.
Speaking about what influenced his decision to go vegan, Gauthier said: “[PETA activists] were saying I was a horrible person because I was using foie gras.
“I thought about it and started to listen to what people had to say about the suffering of animals and thought ‘what am I here for? Is this really the future?’”
In the episode, Gauthier told the show’s contestants: “It’s very difficult to be creative with plant-based but it offers you a lot of different aspects that you probably never used before.”
Showcasing how creative you can get with plants, the contestants presented judges with an array of tempting dishes such as a Greek stew with fava puree, an Indian-themed plate, with chana dhaal, pakora with sweet potato, parsnip, and carrot, and chutneys.
For desserts, judges were presented with a dessert platter featuring panna cotta and mango and passionfruit sorbet, a taste experience Gauthier described as like “‘being a child and eating it for the first time”. If you missed the episode you can catch up online on BBC iPlayer here .

I don’t think it should be a requirement at all, but I do find that many people of a certain ethnicity/nationality self-identify themselves when eating their native cuisine in a foreign country. For example, I’ve seen many reviews like, “You’ll find that few Indian restaurants in Finland serve anything close to traditionally spiced Indian food, but this is the closest you’ll come to authentic in Helsinki- I should know, I’m Indian.”
I myself have recently returned from Ghana and was craving some Ghanaian food at home in NYC. Browsing reviews on Google maps I found lots of reviews from people who self-identified as Ghanaian and saying the food tasted just like it did “at home.” Of course there were lots of reviews that didn’t indicate nationality, but I think people are proud of their cuisines and will be the first to say, this is really good or this totally missed the mark and I should know because I grew up eating/cooking this food.

Curry for breakfast

Adventures, reviews, recipes and gluttony Wednesday, 20 March 2019 Curry for breakfast One thing I do love about being a proper grown up is that you can wake up on a Saturday morning and decide you’re going to have a curry for breakfast. Which is probably marginally less fun than eating a curry late on a Friday night and sleeping through Saturday morning, which comprised of most of my early twenties, but makes me feel slightly less resentful about not being able to sleep the clock around any more. While my favourite Sri Lankan place is just down the road and makes superlative chole bhature (fried bread and chickpea curry), I fancied something a bit different. Somehow I also managed to persuade the Ewing that she also wanted something a bit different That something starting with driving around the M25 while listening to me singing along to my 90s indie playlist and ending up at the veritable New Asian Tandoori Restaurant – aka Roxy’s – in Southall for some traditional Punjabi food. From the list of chaats (small, savoury snacks) we started with pani puri, or, as it’s known in the Punjab, golgappa. A dish that’s fun to say, and even more fun to eat. To do so you take a crisp, hollow puri, carefully make a hole in the top and stuff it with a mixture of chilli, chutney, potato, onion and chickpeas. To finish, top it off with a glug of tamarind water (known as imli pani), and quickly pop the whole thing in your mouth with as much decorum as you can manage. In my case, not much. While I like to think there are few curry dishes I haven’t tried (I’ve certainly eaten enough curries), in reality I’m a mere pretender when it comes to the cuisine of the Indian sub-continent. In reality this is only a good thing as it means I still get to discover new dishes, even if I’m only twenty miles from home. Today’s new dishes were sarson ka saag, or mustard greens, traditionally served with makki ki roti, an unleavened grilled corn bread topped with lashings of butter. Mustard greens are traditionally eaten in winter and spring, so we were bang in season to enjoy their rich earthiness. Perfect when scooped up with pieces of the sweet, smoky grilled roti, which resembled a giant Mexican tortilla and was none the worse for it. Another Punjabi favourite, only available here at the weekends, is dal makhani, or ‘buttery lentils’. Made from whole black lentils (urad) and red kidney beans the dish gets its richness from lashings of butter and cream. As it’s tomato-based, the sauce resembled a spiced version of Heinz tomato soup. Which, everybody knows, is the best soup. I’d try to fool myself by saying the lentils made this healthy, but we all know this contained more glorious dairy than the EU butter mountain. We tried to order a Punjabi chicken curry but that wasn’t ready, so settled for chilli chicken instead. An admirable substantiation, this was excellent – a sweet, rich, almost sticky sauce full of juicy chunks of chicken. I didn’t even mind the odd piece of green pepper, a vegetable that normally conspires to ruin any dish they get near. To finish we could have gone down the Broadway for chunks of burfi – a dense milky fudge, often studded with nuts – or some gulab jamun – curls of fried batter soaked in a sweet sugar syrup that are freshly fried out on the busy street – but I’m still eschewing the sugar. Instead we nibbled on a handful of breath-freshening fennel seed, paid the, very modest, bill and went down the road to see the house where the Ewing’s mum grew up. Even with our impromptu tour the advantage of being up and out so early meant we were still back home in good time for lunch. Posted by

Spring is almost here, and with the warmer weather comes new movies. Next month, Netflix will be releasing several great titles that you really shouldn’t miss, including the never-before-released Roadshow cut of The Hateful Eight ! Check out the best new TV shows and movies coming to Netflix in April 2019.
Movies Coming to Netflix in April 2019
https://d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.ne…ng-700×292.jpg
Burning
Burning is a masterpiece. Does that sound hyperbolic? Maybe – but it’s true. This slow-burn thriller Lee Chang-dong works its way under your skin, and stays there, haunting you for days to come after you’ve seen it. The story concerns Jong-su ( Yoo Ah-in ), a directionless young man who reconnects with an old childhood friend, Hae-mi ( Jeon Jong-seo ). The two have a quick sexual fling, but Hae-mi returns from a vacation with the mysterious, handsome Ben ( Steven Yeun ), who slowly reveals himself to be a potential sociopath. From there, things get increasingly dark and engrossing. This is a must-see.

The Hateful Eight (Extended Version)
This is kind of a big deal. The Roadshow version of Quentin Tarantino ‘s The Hateful Eight , which runs 187 minutes, and had an intermission, played in 70mm in select theaters before a shorter 168 minute cut was released soon after. The shorter cut was the one released on home video, and has been on Netflix for the last few months. The extended cut has never been released – until now, apparently. Netflix will drop it on their service in April, which hopefully means a Blu-ray release isn’t too far away either. Tarantino’s locked-room mystery is a bloody, brutal story about racism in America – a film that feels even more depressingly prescient today than it did in 2015.
https://d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.ne…ix-700×321.jpg
All the President’s Men
All the President’s Men is fantastic – the true story of how Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein brought down the Nixon administration. It’s also a fun reminder of an era where reporting on corruption in the White House actually resulted in something! Unlike today, in our current nightmarish existence! Alan J. Pakula , working with William Goldman ‘s incredible script, finds ways to make people sitting in rooms talking look and feel incredibly exciting.
https://d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.ne…oo-700×340.jpg
The Fifth Element
The Fifth Element swings for the fences, resulting in a wild, over-the-top action sci-fi film that still holds up. You just can’t beat Gary Oldman limping around with a weird plastic bowl on his head, speaking with a strange Southern accent. The story involves a cab driver ( Bruce Willis ) and a supreme being ( Milla Jovovich ) tasked with saving the universe. But really, it’s just an excuse to show off bright costumes and stunning visual effects.
https://d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.ne…on-700×300.jpg
Freddy vs. Jason
Freddy vs. Jason is silly as hell, and that’s what makes it so much fun. A movie like this doesn’t need a brilliant script. I’m not sure if it needs a script at all. It just needs to put Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees on screen together, and let them beat the hell out of each other. Which it does, and then some. Everything else is secondary.
