Royal G: Not your mum’s Indian

Royal G: Not your mum’s Indian

Radar Royal G: Not your mum’s Indian
With almost three decades of experience under his belt, Javier Carmona has now brought a fresh take on Indian food with his new venue, Royal G. Carmona served as executive chef of the Mouthful Group, which included Mexico, Orleans and Beirut, proving his expertise at world cuisine.
Royal G is one of seven new eateries opening at Auckland’s Eastridge Mall as part of its new dining precinct, Eateries at Eastridge. Carmona got involved while looking for a new site for a fine-dining venture, which was managed by the same landlord.
“My first reaction was no,” he admitted. “But then I thought about it, and I’ve had this idea for a couple of years, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to implement it.”
Now in its sixth week, Royal G and the Eastridge complex have both been successful.
“Nights are really good,” he said. “People have come on board and it’s always busy – we’re providing an alternative to Mission Bay, which has the perception of being a bit touristy. This set-up offers a flexible dining environment.”
Carmona designed the fit-out himself, which he admits is heavily influenced by the films of Wes Anderson.
“The menu board is inspired by The Grand Budapest Hotel, and even the uniforms we wear have a bit of a Wes Anderson vibe,” Carmona said. “I was trying to create something a little bit whimsical.”
As for the food, Carmona aimed to take the standard perception of Indian food and turn it on its head.
“That’s what we’re trying to get at with ‘not your mum’s Indian’ – we want to change the perception of Indian cuisine, move away from the same five or six curries that you find on every Indian takeaway menu in the country.”
The menu includes dishes like Yesterday’s Lamb Curry (fresh turmeric, spiced peanuts, burnt chard and cultured garlic, playing on the idea that curry tastes better the next day), Sourdough Samosa (fenugreek goat shoulder, bitter melon and Indian pale ale ketchup) and Parsi Eggplant (black dahl, smoked yoghurt, crisp chickpea, raw cauliflower and pomegranate seed). The food is prepared on a series of small grills over cast-iron gas burners – hardly a conventional kitchen.
While Royal G has enjoyed plenty of compliments for the food, the response from the Indian community has been particularly positive. The Chit Chaat In A Bag has been a hit with older eaters, something which surprised Carmona. The dish consists of potato strings, Maharajan beef, puffed rice, green chutney and peanut, served in a crisp packet – “I knew the way we served it would be popular with younger people, but I wasn’t expecting older people to take to it as well as they have.”
In keeping with Carmona’s plans to invert typical Indian food, he also sought to make changes to how the food itself was served.
“We thought we’d try for a fresh approach, and not necessarily hire someone with years of hospo experience under their belt,” he said. “We were trying to move away from the ‘right’ way of doing front of house, and bring in a casual, street food vibe. It didn’t really work out, but that was a learning experience for us.”
As for the name, Carmona admits that Royal G doesn’t really mean anything. The use of the word ‘Royal’ is widespread in Indian culture – from sports teams like Royal Challengers Bangalore to innumerable food and beverage products, while “ji” is an honorific suffix used in languages across the Indian subcontinent.
“We just put the two together.” Share on

TRAVEL| 10 Fun Or Not Facts About Mauritius

TRAVEL| 10 Fun Or Not Facts About Mauritius Mariam Shittu Travel africa , beach , holiday , island , Lifestyle , mauritius , tourism , tourist , travel-diaries , travelblogger 15 Comments I spent five days exploring the island of Mauritius while staying at the Radisson Blu Azuri Resort & Spa. Mauritius is a volcanic island located in the eastern part of Africa. Yes Africa, isn’t that something? It’s famous for its beautiful white sand beaches and coral reefs. As part of my plan to explore Africa, I have ticked another country off my list and I’m here once again with 10 fun or not facts. 1. Mauritius is Beautiful Mauritius is the most beautiful country I have ever been to. I have never seen a sky as blue as the one in Mauritius. I couldn’t help but gawk at how special this country is especially the fact that it is in Africa. I took so many photos that I shared 10 wallpapers from Mauritius to show you a glimpse of just how beautiful this island is. Parasailing in Belle Mare 2. Sugarcane Cultivation is big business Mauritius is surrounded by sugarcane plantations. Sugarcane is presently cultivated on 85% of the arable land in Mauritius. Everywhere you go, there is a sugarcane plantation, and it’s not hard to miss. It’s on every street, every turn, every highway, behind most houses, etc. On average, 600,000 tonnes sugar is produced annually with most (530,000) tones of the sugar being exported to the European Union( source) . 3. It is mostly hot in Mauritius The temperature was always around 31 ºC during my stay in Mauritius. However, as hot as it was, it rained a few times and there was also an alert for mist falls. The country has a winter season which is from May to October where the temperature drops from hot to balmy with frequent rain and cold breezes. So if you intend to visit, have your sunscreen, flip-flops, beach hats, face caps, sunglasses and umbrella ready. Radisson Blu Azuri 4. French is spoken predominantly in Mauritius If you check anywhere, French is not an official language in Mauritius but it is spoken predominantly. You are told ‘’Bonjour’’ first before ‘’Good morning’’ which was okay because I know some words in French. I just really wished I could communicate easily in the language. However, Mauritius is an English speaking country as well which was great for people like me. Most of the foreigners we met spoke French and it was as if they intentionally chose Mauritius because they could converse in their language. Mauritians speak French, English, Mauritian Creole, French Creole and ethnic languages such as Hindi and Mandarin. 5. Mauritius is visa-on-arrival for Nigerians If you’ve been looking for somewhere nice to go that is not too far with no visa hassle, Mauritius is a good choice and visa is issued on arrival. There is no direct flight to Mauritius from Nigeria. I flew South Africa airways with a stop over in Johannesburg and the total flight time was about 10 hours (5:45 to Johannesburg and 3:55 to Mauritius). My visa was issued on arrival at no cost and the immigration officers were really pleasant and ready to answer any questions we had. However, if you don’t like being the odd one out, make sure to travel in a group lol, because you may not see any Nigerian during your entire stay. I didn’t hahaha. 6. There are no snakes in Mauritius & Mauritius has minimal shark attacks but many jellyfish attacks No snakes definitely came as news to me. I went on a hike during my stay through Bras D’eau National Park to Post Lafayette Beach and I was talking about how the Park was so similar to Lekki Conservation Centre here in Lagos, when my tour guide told me there are no snakes in Mauritius. I was shocked because I’ve always thought that as long as there’s a bush or forest, a snake resides there. I will like to believe that there are grass snakes somewhere deep in a forest that no one has seen lol . Bras D’eau National Park If you like to swim in the ocean, you will have to be careful not to get stung by a jellyfish. There are minimal shark alerts in Mauritius because of the coral reefs in its waters which prevent sharks form having access to the beaches. However, there are many jellyfish attacks and I was told there was an alert a week before my stay at the hotel. 7. Most of the Mauritian population are of Indian origin Mauritius is the only African country to have a Hindu majority. Most Mauritians I encountered during my visit are Indian; black and white. Guess what? the Female black Indian Mauritians, have nappy hair. it’s just a little bit more curly but I thought that was really sweet. I got on a local bus during my visit from Post Lafayette beach to Azuri just to experience it and only Indians were on the bus except me lol . The bus had a conductor like we have in Nigeria, who accepted payments and issued tickets. 8. Land purchase grants citizenship This is good for people who will do anything to change their citizenship lol . Foreigners are allowed to buy land/property in specific areas at the same price it is sold to citizens. You are also allowed to pay over a period of years if required and you automatically become a citizen when you purchase land. Rivière du Rempart 9. Mauritian cuisine is a blend of Indian, French, European and Chinese Rice and bread are the main foods that Mauritians eat. There was always bread available for breakfast, lunch and dinner; flat bread, roti, chapati, pita, baguette, bouche, bun, etc. For a bread addict, this was really hard for me to resist and I think I ate one type of bread everyday but I made sure to stay clear of white bread. I explored all the food available and I tried some Indian sauces and various seafood dishes. 10. Mauritius was the only known habitat of the dodo The dodo(raphus cucullatus) is an extinct flightless bird that was endemic to the island of Mauritius. As a result, the dodo is a national symbol for the country and is featured in the country’s coat of arms and immigration stamp. Mauritius Independence Day – March 12. Spot the dodo Until next time, au revior ile Maurice. Are you tempted to visit Mauritius? Which African country do you think I should visit next? Thanks for reading.

Native American Chef Wins Prestigious Food Award

Native American Chef Wins Prestigious Food Award By Tweet WASHINGTON — A Native American chef has been awarded one of the food industry’s highest honors for his efforts in revitalizing traditional indigenous food systems in North America. On Tuesday, the James Beard Foundation (JBF) announced that Sean Sherman, a member of the Oglala Lakota Sioux tribe from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota and founder/CEO of The Sioux Chef is to receive a Leadership Award for his work in helping Native Americans reclaim historic food and agricultural systems. Beard awards, which Time magazine has dubbed “the Oscars” of the American food industry, are given out annually in a number of categories; the 2019 Leadership Award celebrates food system ” visionaries” and acknowledges Sherman’s extensive research into diverse Native American farming techniques, wild food usage and harvesting, land stewardship, food preservation, as well as tribal cultures and histories. A dish created by Lakota “Sioux Chef” Sean Sherman, which features elk, wild rice, fern fiddlehead, berries, spring onion and sunchoke. “We’re trying to raise awareness of the history of the land and on how to live sustainability on what’s around us,” said Sherman, speaking to VOA by phone during a two-hour drive to Iowa to buy heritage seeds. These seeds of rare, heirloom and open-pollinated plant varieties could disappear if not cultivated and banked. “Even non-indigenous chefs should be really excited to learn about plant diversity to utilize in their cuisines,” he said. “The broiling of their fish over flame,” an engraving by Theodor De Bry, 1590. Courtesy of the John Carter Brown Library at Brown University. Lessons of the ancestors Prior to the arrival of European settlers, tribes hunted, fished, gathered and farmed a wide array of animals and plants, depending on their locations. By the late 1800s, forced onto reservations that were often far from their traditional homelands, tribes were restricted in their rights to hunt, fish or forage for wild food and forced to make do with U.S. Army rations of flour, lard and salt—ingredients alien to the indigenous diet. The rations were later replaced by the commodity food program. “That has never been a nutritional program, and it has contributed to the health epidemics that we see in tribes across the country–mass obesity, mass rates of heart disease,Type Two diabetes—you name it,” said Sherman. “A change has to take place, and this is the best way to start to utilize the lessons of our ancestors that would have been passed down to us, if it hadn’t been for cultural assimilation efforts. In 2014, Sherman launched “Sioux Chef”–a play on the French term sous-chef , the number two person in any restaurant kitchen. The Minneapolis-based business was more than just a catering company; it was a collaboration of chefs, food preservationists, botanists and enthusiasts from several U.S. tribes all bent on restoring pre-contact diets. This 1906 photo by Edward S. Curtis shows Hopi women grinding grain into flour. Sherman and Minneapolis chef/food critic Beth Dooley in 2017 published “The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen,” a cookbook featuring modern takes on traditional ingredients: stuffed squash blossoms, for example, wild-rice cakes or venison with apples and cranberries, all made from ingredients easily found in nature. This earned him the 2018 James Beard Foundation Book Award in the Best American Cookbook category. This year, Sherman and his team will open a Native American restaurant in Minneapolis, along with a non-profit indigenous food laboratory for shared use. “People can take classes on wild foods and education, agriculture or food preservation, and the restaurant is designed to allow people to develop their skills working alongside us in the restaurant,” he said.”Our ultimate goal is to open up indigenous food labs in cities everywhere.” He’s also a big proponent of so-called permaculture design — working with nature to meet food needs. Sean Sherman prepared this modern version of a traditional Lakota dish, Wasna, made with duck, popped wild rice and amaranth, foraged fennel and miners lettuce at the 20th annual World of Flavors at the Culinary Institute of America, St. Helena, Ca. “We want to get tribes to use their open spaces and landscape with the foods that are particular to their regions,” he said. That might be cultivated crops like squash, beans or corn, staples of pre-contact agriculture across the country; amaranth, a highly nutritious grain on which South American tribes once thrived; or wild rice from the Great Lakes Region. While his work focuses on North American foods and peoples, Sherman said it has important applications for all indigenous peoples. “We want to become a resource for anyone interested in decolonizing foodways across the globe,” he said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re in Africa or India or Southeast Asia; it’s the same story everywhere. We just want to set the tone.”

Elly McCausland and Dan Saladino have won the Jane Grigson Trust prize, marking the first time the judges have decided to award the prize to two shortlisted authors.
Food blogger and literature lecturer McCausland won for The Botanical Kitchen (Absolute Press) and radio journalist Saladino for The Ark of Taste (Jonathan Cape). In The Botanical Kitchen , McCausland takes an in-depth look at our love affair with every part of the plant – fruits, flowers, leaves and seeds, from orchards to the tropics, tea leaves to tayberries – and shows how they enhance flavour, dramatically shifting and developing the character of a dish. The book will be published in March 2020. In The Ark of Taste , to be published in Spring 2020, Saladino takes the reader on a journey of discovery into the world’s most endangered foods and disappearing flavours, starting with the blood oranges of his family’s Sicilian roots, in order to better understand the world and our place in it. Selina Periampillai was named runner-up for The Island Kitchen which will be published by Bloomsbury in May 2019. In The Island Kitchen , the private cook and recipe consultant, who is of Mauritian descent, celebrates the cuisines of the Indian Ocean, including recipes for dishes such as Seychellois Creole Octopus Salad and Peanut Pumpkin Stew from Madagascar. Chair of judges of the Jane Grigson Trust Award, Geraldene Holt, said: “The field of applications was the strongest we’ve yet received, with an amazingly wide variety of subjects and treatments, and the decision of who should be the final winner was incredibly difficult to make. The judges have therefore decided that, with such talented entrants, the award should be made to two authors who between them exemplify the best of modern food writing. “Elly’s is a very well-researched book taking a refreshing view of cooking with seeds and spices, leaves and flowers of familiar and also little-known ingredients. She brings these flavours into focus in a totally delicious way. Dan Saladino’s book examines the quiet tragedy of endangered foods. He asks important questions about how and why this is happening and inspires us to act. His book is an eloquent cry for action.” Created in memory of the distinguished British food writer Jane Grigson, the £2000 award – which will be shared between McCausland and Saladino – is made to a first-time writer of a book on food or drink which has been commissioned but has not yet been published. The runners-up receive £100 of book tokens. The winners were announced at an award ceremony at Quo Vadis restaurant in Soho on Monday 18th March.

How to Eat Vegan at McDonald’s | LIVEKINDLY

Gillian Fisher Evergreen Writer | contactable via hello@livekindly.co The most famous fast-food chain on the planet is welcoming more vegan offerings than ever to its golden arches. McDonald’s, the quintessential American hamburger joint, first fired up its grill in 1940, serving burgers, fries, and milkshakes. Little could the McDonald’s brothers Richard and Maurice know that their humble California hamburger stand would go on to become one of the largest restaurant chains on the planet, serving up quick, cheap food in more than 100 countries and more than 37,000 locations. The industry colossus has received a makeover in the past couple of decades, putting emphasis upon sourcing quality ingredients and adopting a policy of transparency regarding its nutritional labeling. McDonald’s has also begun offering healthier menu options such as salads, smoothies, and fruit bags to add some five-a-day goodness to its offerings. Animal Welfare McDonald’s Animal Welfare In recent years, the company has become more observant of animal welfare issues as well, winning the RSPCA Assured’s Food Service Award for commitment to Farm Animal Welfare in 2017. McDonald’s also announced in 2015 that it would stop using battery eggs and vowed that all of its suppliers would be cage-free by 2025. On its “Scale for Good” section of its website , McDonald’s explains that it developed a set of Guiding Principles for Animal Health and Welfare. “Quality: We believe treating animals with care and respect is an integral part of our commitment to serving McDonald’s customers safe food. Healthy animals provide safe food.” Sustainability Initiatives McDonald’s Sustainability Initiatives According to its own figures released in 2017, McDonalds’ net worth is around $106.4 billion . The market leader lists environment protection and sustainability as parts of its business model and outlines plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 36 percent. McDonalds’ eco-friendly goal is to be achieved through initiatives such as sourcing locally, using LED lights, and improving the recyclability of its packaging. In fact, McDonald’s announced that by 2025 100 percent of its guest packaging will come from renewable, recycled, or certified sources. Global Menus McDonald’s Menus Global Part of the fast food giant’s success is its observation of global trends and national markets. As such, the company tailors its worldwide menus to include aspects of local cuisine and meet socio-cultural and religious dietary requirements. Movie fans may remember the European nomenclature of the Big Mac being famously discussed by John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson in Quentin Tarantino’s cult 1994 film, “Pulp Fiction.” In Israel for example, 50 of the country’s 180 branches are strictly Kosher, and even some of the non-Kosher branches will provide dairy-free desserts if asked. All of Saudi Arabia’s McDonald’s restaurants are certified Halal , and in 2013, McDonald’s opened its first fully vegetarian restaurant in Amritsar , Northern India. McDonald’s Indian menu is particularly varied, with exclusive products like its Veg Pizza McPuff and McSpicy Paneer being top sellers. The McAloo Tikki, made from potato and spices, has also been released in the U.S. One of its top sellers in India, it’s currently the only vegan burger option on offer by the chain in the U.S. Plant-based foods are a key market area for food retailers, as in recent years there has been a global increase in the number of vegans, vegetarians, and flexitarians . The vegan revolution is so widespread that it is making waves in Kenya , Mexico , and in the UK; data released in 2018 suggested that the numbers of British vegans had increased by 700 percent in just two years. McDonald’s Vegan Options McDonald’s Vegan Options McDonald’s did not get to the hamburger heights of serving 69 million customers a day by avoiding change, and the global company has made several vegan additions to its menu in the last couple of years. These plant-based provisions are being served up at McDonald’s counters across the world, so whether you’re in Helsinki or Huddersfield, here is everything you need for ordering vegan at McDonald’s . How to Eat Vegan at McDonald’s 1. The Spicy Veggie One Vegan McDonald’s Spicy Veggie | image/Cardiff_Veganz Wrapped up tight in a floury tortilla are McDonald’s new red pepper and pesto goujons, made of yellow split peas, arborio rice, and sundried tomato pesto. This new item was added to McDonald’s UK menus in early 2019 and the wrap is approved by the Vegetarian Society. It gets its spiciness from the fiery vegan jalapeño relish. 2. The Happy Meal Veggie Wrap McDonald’s Vegan Happy Meal The Happy Meal was first launched as a child-friendly combo back in 1979 and forty years later, the first vegan kids’ option hit UK McDonald’s. Instead of being covered in spicy relish, the goujons are sauced up with dairy-free red pesto and wrapped in a slightly smaller flour tortilla. For £2.79, parents can treat their child to the vegan wrap meal, which comes with a drink and small fries. McDonald’s has made a shrewd move by incorporating more vegan-friendly meal choices into its menu, especially the Happy Meal addition. With the number of people opting for vegan food accelerating at breakneck speed, it is unsurprising that the market for children is also growing rapidly. A study conducted in 2018 revealed that out of its focus group of 2,200 UK parents, one in 12 is raising their children vegan. McDonald’s said that it decided to introduce more vegan-friendly options following a customer poll which revealed 33 percent wanted more meat-free options from the chain. The Happy Meal, in particular, is receiving rave reviews from parents including singer Frankie Bridge, who told the Huffington Post UK that having more meal options for children makes her life “ all the easier and the Veggie Happy Meal wrap flavor was literally chosen by children, so I know it’s something that my son Parker will love too. “I think it’s important that our diet is varied and full of choice, and for me at the moment, this means introducing more meat-free meals.” While the Happy Meal has proved highly successful with minor McDonald’s fans, there really is no good reason why adults shouldn’t be rewarded with a little toy at the end of their lunch, too. 3. Vegetable Deluxe Vegan McDonald’s Vegetable Deluxe The Vegetable Deluxe, which is available at all UK McDonald’s restaurants, also contains the toothsome goujons. In this offering, the goujons are sandwiched in a sesame seed bun with lashings of lettuce. This veggie burger can easily be made vegan, just ask the person serving you to hold the sandwich sauce which contains egg yolk. 4. The McAloo Tikki Vegan McDonald’s McAloo Tikki One of Indian McDonald’s bestsellers, this tasty bit of Eastern spice was rolled out at McDonald’s global USA headquarters restaurant in Chicago at the end of 2018. Named after its main potato component (aloo is the Hindi word for potato), the vegan patty is made of spuds, peas, and plenty of spices before being sandwiched between two burger buns with salad and vegan tomato mayo. At present, the Indian offering is only being served at the one U.S. branch but is sold throughout its 300 restaurants in India. 5. Vegan Vegetable Nuggets McDonald’s Vegetable Nuggets One of the few plant-based additions to forgo the ‘Mc’ prefix, these fried little mouthfuls of delight are a fully vegan alternative to McDonald’s traditional McNuggets. Made with hearty ingredients such as cauliflower, chickpeas, and carrots, the nuggets are then coated in crisp breadcrumb and fried. The vegan nuggets were introduced this month to McDonald’s Norway branches and are one of several new Nordic additions to the company’s vegan menu. 6. Falafel Nuggets Happy Meal McDonald’s Vegan Falafel Nuggets McDonald’s Sweden introduced falafel nuggets as a Happy Meal earlier in 2019. The new nuggets are bite-sized servings of the classic middle eastern dish, made with chickpeas, onions, and cumin and served with a red pepper sauce. Most of McDonald’s new vegan options keep it traditional and are made up of wholesome vegetables. A few Brits may remember the short-lived Quorn premier served with chili sauce in the early noughties, but otherwise, the plant-based options are usually overtly veggie. However, for meat reducers or people following a flexitarian diet , having plant-based foods mimicking the texture of meat is a fantastic way to enable people to reduce their meat consumption. With this in mind, the next two McOfferings are a little more meaty. 7. The McVegan McDonald’s McVegan Since its launch across Finland at the end of 2017, this McVegan has become a major hit with Scandinavian McDonald’s patrons. Made by Swedish company Orkla, the soy-based patty gets its flavor from onions and mushrooms, while tomato powder gives it a beefy hue. The McVegan proved so popular in Finland, it was rolled out to Swedish branches in early 2018. A trailblazer for the Nordic fast food market, McDonald’s Finland sold 150,000 McVegan burgers in the month following its launch. To put that in perspective, Finland’s national population is only 5.5 million, so just under three percent of the country were clamoring for a taste of the McVegan. That would be like 1.3 million Brits queuing up for a new vegan goody . 8. The El Veggo McDonald’s El Veggo Vegan Sandwich In 2018, Finnish McDonald’s launched a second vegan burger nationwide named the El Veggo . Unlike the more umami McVegan, the burger has a spicy salsa flavor and is topped with vegan McFeast sauce. The burger was limited edition, only available for the month of December. However, the McVegan was also not intended to be a permanent Finnish menu item, so only time will tell. The increase of vegan eaters is leading market trends in Scandinavia. As Camilla Björkbom of the Association of Animal Rights comments, the sales of vegan products have “exploded” in recent years. “It is a very positive trend for the animals, where we can see that more and more people choose [vegan] more or less regularly,” she told the BBC. “[B]ut without necessarily defining themselves as vegetarian or vegan.” 9. Apple Pies McDonald’s Vegan Apple Pies | image/cakeswithoutclaws In keeping with its stars and stripes background, McDonald’s apple pies are vegan-friendly and sold at all restaurants across the world. There is nothing quite so satisfying as biting through the crisp sugary batter to the (occasionally scalding) hot fruit filling. Other vegan-friendly options include the green salad, without any dressings, the hash browns in UK branches (not in U.S. chains). 10. French Fries Vegan McDonald’s Fries There is something wonderfully reassuring about the McDonald’s french fry. For those in the U.S. seeking a veggie fry, this one’s not for you as they’re fried in beef fat. But in the UK and elsewhere, that’s not the case . These hot slithers of spud are particular to McDonald’s, with no imitation quite capturing that mix of slightly chewy, salty crunch. The McDonald’s fry is beyond moreish and one of the few occasions you will ever hear a person from the UK refer to hot slices of fried potato as anything other than chips. Summary How to Eat Vegan at McDonald’s Description Wherever you are, there’s a vegan McDonald’s menu item for you – from burgers to nuggets and lots of other food options, this is the complete guide. One of the most popular restaurants in Little India , the bustling spot is always brimming with hungry foodies. We love that meals are served in a traditional manner — on a banana leaf instead of a plate. Take your pick from their extensive menu, which range from curries to masala dishes, sambal options, tikka, tandoori, paneer and dhall. Both North and South cuisine are available. The Apolo Fish Head Curry, which is made from scratch with authentic indian spices and herbs and served with assorted vegetables such Okra, Tomato and Eggplants, is an absolute popular favourite at this place. Mouthwateringly good, it comes highly recommended. Banana Leaf Apolo also has a swankier, quieter and more upmarket outlet over at Parkway Parade if you want to dine in comfort.

Washington, D.C. – Washington. – The District. – D.C. – (894 links).

Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as Washington or D.C., is the capital of the United States. Founded after the American Revolution as the seat of government of the newly independent country, Washington was named after George Washington, first President of the United States and Founding Father. As the seat of the United States federal government and several international organizations, Washington is an important world political capital. The city is also one of the most visited cities in the world, with more than 20 million tourists annually. The signing of the Residence Act on July 16, 1790, approved the creation of a capital district located along the Potomac River on the country’s East Coast. The U.S. Constitution provided for a federal district under the exclusive jurisdiction of the U.S. Congress, and the District is therefore not a part of any state. The states of Maryland and Virginia each donated land to form the federal district, which included the pre-existing settlements of Georgetown and Alexandria. The City of Washington was founded in 1791 to serve as the new national capital. In 1846, Congress returned the land originally ceded by Virginia; in 1871, it created a single municipal government for the remaining portion of the District.

apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap070807.html 18/02/2018 You don’t have to be at Yellowstone to see a sky this beautiful, but it helps. Only at Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, USA, would you see the picturesque foreground of the famous Old Faithful Geyser erupting in front an already picturesque sky. Old Faithful Geyser, visible in the foreground, is seen propelling a stream of hot water over 30 meters in the air. This happens predictably for a few minutes about every 90 minutes. Also predictable are the brightest orbs that populate the nighttime sky, although those visible at any one time keep changing. Visible far in the background sky of this mid-July image are the plane of our Milky Way Galaxy on the left, and the bright planet Jupiter on the right. Jupiter is the brightest celestial object in the entire image. Old Faithful has been erupting at least since the late 1800s.

On March 2, 1865, the House of Representatives separated the appropriating and banking and currency duties from the Committee on Ways and Means, which was first established in 1789, and assigned them to two new committees – the Committee on Appropriations and the Committee on Banking and Currency. Until 1865, all “general” appropriations bills had been controlled in the House by the Committee on Ways and Means – also in charge of revenue measures and some other classes of substantive legislation. The new Committee on Appropriations – six Republicans and three Democrats – was appointed on December 11, 1865, in the 1st session of the 39th Congress, and first reported the general appropriations bills for the fiscal year 1867.

artattackinternational.org 11/02/2018 Art Attack is a collective which was founded in 1979 in Los Angeles, California, as a guerilla art group. The group moved to Washington, D.C., in 1981 and subsequently to New York City. Throughout this timeframe the group’s evolution led to a structured format and it is now incorporated as a not-for-profit organization. In its infancy, our group dynamic bordered on anarchy; participation by an individual was capricious and sporadic. As the group matured, a core group was formed by a few dedicated members to manage the technical tasks required for stability. Art Attack maintains a formal pool of associates who participate on a project-by-project basis.

copyright.gov 24/07/2018 The United States Copyright Office, and the position of Register of Copyrights, were created by Congress in 1897. The Register directs the Copyright Office as a separate federal department within the Library of Congress, under the general oversight of the Librarian, pursuant to specific statutory authorities set forth in the United States Copyright Act. Earlier in the Nation’s history, from 1870-1896, the Librarian of Congress administered copyright registration (at that time mostly books) directly, and earlier still, from 1790-1896, U.S. district courts were responsible for doing so. Today, the Copyright Office is responsible for administering a complex and dynamic set of laws, which include registration, the recordation of title and licenses, a number of statutory licensing provisions, and other aspects of the 1976 Copyright Act and the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

foreignpolicy.com 30/05/2018 More than 40 years ago, against the backdrop of an America torn apart by Vietnam— Foreign Policy magazine was founded by Harvard professor Samuel Huntington, a one-time hawk, and his close friend, Warren Demian Manshel, a dove. The purpose and mission was to question commonplace views and groupthink and to give a voice to alternative views about American foreign policy. Huntington hoped it would be “serious but not scholarly, lively but not glib.” In 2000, under the ownership of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, FP transitioned from a slim, quarterly journal to the glossy magazine it is today — while retaining its independent viewpoint and commitment to rigorous exploration of the world’s biggest issues.

ips-dc.org 19/09/2018 The story of Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) began at a high-powered State Department meeting of generals and defense industry executives in 1961, at the height of the Cold War. In the room were White House staffer Marcus Raskin and State Department lawyer Richard Barnet, who had joined the Kennedy Administration with hopes of systemic transformation. But after hearing the speeches and rhetoric of the officials that day, the two young public servants concluded that systemic change can only happen through the power social movements. Within two years, Raskin and Barnet had left the Kennedy Administration and founded the Institute for Policy Studies, where they could more freely “speak truth to power.”

web.ornl.gov/sci/techresources/Human_Genome/index.shtml 05/03/2019 Begun formally in 1990, the U.S. Human Genome Project was a 13-year effort coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The project originally was planned to last 15 years, but rapid technological advances accelerated the completion date to 2003. To help achieve these goals, researchers also studied the genetic makeup of several nonhuman organisms. These include the common human gut bacterium Escherichia coli, the fruit fly, and the laboratory mouse. A unique aspect of the U.S. Human Genome Project is that it was the first large scientific undertaking to address potential ELSI implications arising from project data. DOE and NIH Genome Programs set aside 3% to 5% of their respective annual HGP budgets for the study of these issues. Nearly $1 million was spent on HGP ELSI research.

www.doi.gov 26/04/2018 In 1789 Congress created three Executive Departments: Foreign Affairs (later in the same year renamed State), Treasury, and War. It also provided for an Attorney General and a Postmaster General. Domestic matters were apportioned by Congress among these departments. The idea of setting up a separate department to handle domestic matters was put forward on numerous occasions. It wasn’t until March 3, 1849, the last day of the 30th Congress, that a bill was passed to create the Department of the Interior to take charge of the Nation’s internal affairs. The Interior Department had a wide range of responsibilities entrusted to it: the construction of the national capital’s water system, the colonization of freed slaves in Haiti, exploration of western wilderness, oversight of the District of Columbia jail, regulation of territorial governments, management of hospitals and universities, management of public parks, and the basic responsibilities for Indians, public lands, patents, and pensions.

www.dtra.mil 03/03/2019 The Defense Threat Reduction Agency enables the DoD and the U.S. Government to prepare for and combat weapons of mass destruction and improvised threats and to ensure nuclear deterrence. Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) is the youngest agency in the Department of Defense, but in a way it is also the oldest, pre-dating the Department itself. The agency was created in 1998 from a number of other entities to focus their efforts on terrorism, our own nuclear surety, and counterproliferation, but DTRA’s rich legacy extends back to the Manhattan Engineering Project that was created to develop the world’s first atomic bomb during World War II.

www.epa.gov 20/03/2019 Born in the wake of elevated concern about environmental pollution, EPA was established on December 2, 1970 to consolidate in one agency a variety of federal research, monitoring, standard-setting and enforcement activities to ensure environmental protection. Since its inception, EPA has been working for a cleaner, healthier environment for the American people. The mission of EPA is to protect human health and the environment. When Congress writes an environmental law, we implement it by writing regulations. Often, we set national standards that states and tribes enforce through their own regulations. If they fail to meet the national standards, we can help them. We also enforce our regulations, and help companies understand the requirements.

The Naval History and Heritage Command traces its lineage to 1794, when the Navy Department Library was established under the Naval Bureau, which was part of the War Department in Philadelphia. In 1800, President John Adams asked Benjamin Stoddert, the first Secretary of the Navy, to prepare a catalog of professional books best suited for a naval library. Today, the NHHC is the central resource for today’s operational Navy and acts as the service’s institutional memory.

www.ips-dc.org 16/10/2017 The story of IPS (Institute for Policy Studies) began at a high-powered State Department meeting of generals and defense industry executives in 1961, at the height of the Cold War. Within two years, Raskin and Barnet had left the Kennedy Administration and founded the Institute for Policy Studies, where they could more freely “speak truth to power.” For more than five decades, IPS scholar-activists have provided critical support for major social movements by producing seminal books, films, and articles; educating key policymakers and the general public; and crafting practical strategies in support of peace, justice, and the environment.

History CHRIST (Deemed to be University) was born out of the educational vision of St Kuriakose Elias Chavara, an educationalist and social reformer of the nineteenth century in South India. He founded the first Catholic indigenous congregation, Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), in 1831 which administers CHRIST (Deemed to be University).
In 2008 under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India, declared the institution a Deemed to be University, in the name and style of Christ University. One of the first institutions in India to be accredited in 1998 by the NAAC, and subsequently in 2004 and 2016, CHRIST (Deemed to be University) has the top grade ‘A’ in the 4-point scale. Over 20,000 students including international students from more than 60 countries study within CHRIST’s portals of learning. Nearly 1000 highly qualified faculty and staff work at CHRIST. Academic programmes are varied and cover areas of study including engineering, education, law, management, media studies, biosciences, business administration, psychology, paramedical and nursing at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels.
The CHRIST Group of Institutions in association with National Public Schools promotes the Ekya Schools, a brand of boutique schools with several campuses across the city. CHRIST has also partnered with the National Education Trust to found the NPS International School on a lush 6-acre campus in Singapore.
Vision for the new campus CHRIST University’s new 60 acre lakefront campus is located in North Bangalore. Developed as a greenfield project it is easily accessible from Bellary Road (New Airport Road) and well within BDA limits.
The state-of-the-art campus is being developed in a phase-wise manner as per LEED Green Building certification standards, and is designed by award-winning architecture firm CnT Architects. The proposed design features world-class amenities that include a residential zone with staff and student housing. The academic spaces are designed to encourage cross- disciplinary learning and interaction among students. International standard indoor sports complex and separate cricket, athletics and football grounds give students ample opportunities to train and excel in sports. The CHRIST University campus will also feature a variety of spaces for cultural activities that will be able to accommodate a range of audiences.

LIFE SKILLS
The institute has a thought provoking tag line “Transcending Boundaries of Formal Education”©, which clearly underscores the fact that every individual irrespective of their role in society needs certain essential skills beyond their domain knowledge, in order to be successful in whichever walk of life they choose to excel in.
CHRIST endeavors to satisfy this need through training, behavioral coaching and mentoring. The objective is to touch as many lives as possible, providing enduring values in the process and transform the future generations of the society to become better citizens of this world.
TRAINING Training for students
Curriculum for students includes communication skills, personality development, aptitude and finishing school skills training, which is interlaced in their regular course work. This helps in improving their employability quotient to a great extent, as companies who come to campuses to employ students look for these attributes in new recruits, more than their prowess in their domain skills. Hence the students’ transition from the campus to the corporate / business world becomes very smooth and seamless.
Training for the teaching staff
Use of innovative techniques as alternatives to ‘chalk & talk’, effective use of technology to attain success in teaching ‘Gen-Y’, use of path-breaking methods like flipped classrooms are some of the areas that are focussed upon. This helps the faculty in surpassing the expectations of the students in their learning process, and achieves the desired objective of creating thinkers rather than learners by rote.
Training for non-teaching staff and all others
Administrative, non-teaching and other staffs who contribute to the growth of the institutions in the group are provided training periodically in order that they reach their highest potential in their respective areas of work. The objective is to ensure that they understand the importance of their roles and take pride in performing their duties and derive satisfaction for having contributed to the overall success of the group.
PLACEMENT CELL
We at CHRIST Group feel extremely privileged to have been able to provide manpower resources to drive the country’s growth engine. CHRIST University has placed thousands of students in various companies since it was started.
The Placements, both for final jobs and Summer Internships is an integral part of any University’s annual calendar of activities. CHRIST University has a well laid-out systematic process of meeting student’s career aspirations and corporates expectations. The Placement department functions as a bridge between the University’s Schools, Industries and Students. The Placement activities are for the students and by the students. The process is transparent and commences with the uploading student’s profiles on the placement portal. Each student, faculty coordinators and Training and Placement officials have access to the portal.

singapore: Ask the travel expert: What to do when on a 4-day vacay to Singapore?

By Rakshit Desai
We are travelling to Singapore for a four-day trip this month, and have two kids aged 5 and 8 years. We will be staying at the Sentosa Island . Please suggest a suitable itinerary and an exotic seafood restaurant?
If you intend to do a four-day trip, then you can stay in Sentosa Island for two nights and spend the other two in Singapore. Since you are travelling with kids, Sentosa Island offers a wide range of attractions like the Universal Studios, Adventure Cove, Madame Tussauds, Butterfly Park, Insect Kingdom and many more. In Singapore, Jurong Bird Park, Singapore River Safari, Marina Bay Sands Sky Park and the Spectra laser show are some of the major attractions for sightseeing and amusement. You can check out the ‘Singapore Seafood Republic’ restaurant which is quite popular for its specialized exotic seafood servings.
I am planning a trip to Thailand this month, with my kids who are 13 and 9 years old. Can you please suggest the best places along with recommendation for vegetarian restaurants?
Thailand is famous for its culture and tradition. At the same time, it is also known for the vibrant nightlife it offers. Places of prime attraction include Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai etc. that require minimum two nights each for a fulfilling experience. This can include island visits to ‘Phi Phi’, ‘James Bond’, ‘4 islands’, etc. Besides you can also visit animal and marine life amusement parks like ‘Safari World’ and ‘Marine Park’. At Phuket, kids can enjoy the ‘Phuket FantaSea’ show and the ‘Siam Niramit Theatre’ during evenings. Most of these cities offer great shopping experiences which you should not miss. Vegetarian food is available everywhere however Indian cuisine may not be available everywhere.
My son is travelling to Australia for his undergraduate programme and I would like to pack some dehydrated home cooked food. Do u think I can send it with him?
Australia has some of the strictest customs and quarantine laws when it comes to food. It is advisable to avoid carrying any form of food products as it can lead to questioning from authorities at customs and immigration.
Note: The previous edition featuring this question published an answer which contained partial information. Please refer to the answer above. Any inconvenience caused is regretted.
