Indian Cuisine Review: Thevar at 9 Keong Saik Rd, Singapore 089117
Indian Cuisine Review: Thevar at 9 Keong Saik Rd, Singapore 089117
I love Indian food. It is right up there in my top 10 cuisine list when it comes to delivering flavours, textures and excitement. So I was properly excited to accidentally chance upon Thevar when I was looking for Indian cuisine near me on Google Maps. Apparently it is contemporary grill bar and mod-Indian cuisine by Chef Mano Thevar and replaces Meta restaurant (it moved up the street, no wonder it looked so familiar). The small rectangular shophouse features a large open kitchen and a long bar counter along with a few tables on the side.
Here was the menu, which could change depending on seasonality and availability of ingredients. I like the simplicity of it all – I find it super taxing to have to decide what to order between pages and pages of items. Prices are reasonable for the location and positioning of the restaurant.
We ordered a few recommended items between the three of us sat along the bar. Firstly the very pleasant Chettinad Chicken Roti (S$16) which apparently is a super spicy dish OUTSIDE of Singapore, according to my friend. However it’s been toned down for our weaker spice tolerance here and in Thevar and became more of an Indian pulled chicken taco with well-balanced flavours. Super delish. 4/5
The next dish was another starter, the butter mushroom naan with paneer cheese (S$16). We didn’t really expect it to be in this form, which was a pleasant surprise! We had to scoop them into the naan to enjoy. Everything was light and cheery – no complaints and would order again! 4/5
Then for mains we decided to get the Tandoor baby lamb (S$48) with chickpea curry and green chutney since tandoor is their signature move. We paired that with a side of long-grained rice called the Berry Pulao (S$12) with cucumber and raisin raita, which was a slightly sweet and tasty carb companion to the perfectly roasted lamb that was so tender and juicy on the inside which having that delightful slathering of green chutney on top. It was heavenly. 4/5.
Lastly, we ordered some Cempedak puff (S$6) to round off the meal. This was interesting as the jackfruit-durian tasting creme inside wasn’t too strong but goes well with the crispy puff. Would be made even better if there was some vanilla or coconut ice cream, I reckon.
There’s also a complimentary dessert on top of the puffs which was a refreshing twist.
I don’t think I need to repeat myself again after raving through the dishes at Thevar that this is a highly recommended spot to check out if you’re craving for something non-Western. I do hope they will stick around long enough because I’m going to be back!

Quote: : and sorry I always thought the food at AM was it’s weakest point
some of the food in BA Galleries can be quite tasty, I just do not like the cattle feed lot-like presentation 😉 Not if you like middle Eastern or Indian influenced cuisine.
And it’s a hot buffet with lots of food choices in a sprawling sized dining room, how else should they present it?

Padma Lakshmi on how age has only made her more fearless
A post shared by VOGUE India (@vogueindia) on May 2, 2019 at 10:41pm PDT
Lakshmi’s dynamism—and resilience—is impressive. She’s the host of the Emmy-nominated television show, Top Chef . She has also written cookbooks and a memoir , after her modelling and acting careers. She is a mother—her daughter, Krishna Thea Lakshmi-Dell, is nine years old. And she is not hesitant about admitting it: she is an immigrant from Chennai, whose mother arrived in the US with only $100. Lakshmi sees herself as a global citizen, whose values were shaped by her Indian family and then morphed by witnessing and living in the world at large , with New York City being especially formative. The more one listens, and the more one observes, the more extraordinary Lakshmi’s power—newfound or otherwise—becomes. She sets a remarkable (and even ambassadorial) example as an Indian, female or male, on the international stage. A RECOGNISED IDENTITY
“For so long, there weren’t that many Indians working in the media,” she says. “India is such a big country with so many customs, languages and religions that it’s hard to say any one person or idea applies to all of us. But, thankfully, we are better represented now. There are more Indian faces in the mainstream, like Aziz Ansari, Hasan Minhaj and Mindy Kaling. I feel a lot less lonely.” Lakshmi continues, touching on the balance of her Western upbringing and her Indian heritage: “I never quite felt at ease with being that rare representative of Indian womanhood or culture because I didn’t myself know how to be that, or what exactly that even was. I was not quite Indian enough in India and too exotic in the US for so long. In a way, I feel the world has finally caught up.” PAYING IT FORWARD
“I want to work on prose,” she says, regarding her next book. “But sometimes I struggle.” She would like “to produce shows for other women to be in. We have to create a culture, as women get more powerful, to help the younger generation of women. I have a handful of girls in their twenties whom I mentor. One is a cookbook author, one is a writer, one is a young entrepreneur in the food space. It’s not formal…it’s not through a programme or anything. Actually, one of these women came up to me, cold, at Bergdorf Goodman in New York when I was there with my mom. She didn’t know me personally, but she said she was a fan and really wanted advice. That was years ago. And we still talk now!”
As projects in the pipeline go, Lakshmi says she has a “couple of things in development. One of them is a food-based show that’s more international. One is also a scripted pilot that has a woman in her late thirties in the centre, who happens to be Indian American. “I don’t want to play that role. I think there’s a great actress out there who should play that role and have a chance. It is written and I’m producing it and I’d love to see that come to fruition. These things take a while, though.”
Lakshmi also received a major accolade in early 2019: “This year, on International Women’s Day, I had the extreme honour of being officially named a United Nations Development Programme Goodwill Ambassador. This wasn’t something that I could have ever planned for, but I think that all my advocacy work has been about equality in some form or another. I’m looking forward to building off of my experience, on an international scale. Also, I was recently appointed a visiting scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology! Some of my relatives are finally impressed with that one!”
Perhaps the most surprising thing about Lakshmi is that, for her influence and celebrity, she prefers the simpler things that life offers. That, no doubt, links back to the lessons and morals her grandmother in Chennai imparted years ago. Instead of a “fancy, drawn-out haute cuisine meal… despite having analysed food my whole life… I’d prefer to go to a kebab stand in Mumbai late at night,” Lakshmi says. “It’s a better way to get to know people.” She also adds that, speaking to a larger point, she’d like to connect more with India, “to see places I’ve never been.” “Going forward,” she says, “I’d like to have a more consistent grown-up presence in India. I want to have a relationship with the India I don’t yet know.”

AURORA | Mohamad Alnouri is quickly making up for lost time. The 22-year-old Aurora resident, a native of Damascus, Syria is about two years behind his father in starting his own business. “He started his own business at 20 years old,” a chuck ling Alnouri said of his dad. “I started at 22 years old, so I’m a little bit late.” But the upstart entrepreneur has been busy in the past couple of years: He and his family left Egypt — several years after fleeing Syria — and came to Aurora in 2017; he learned English; got a job as a prep cook at Kachina Cantina in Downtown Denver; completed a food safety course at the University of Denver and enrolled in courses at Emily Griffith Technical College in Denver. And earlier this year, Alnouri’s parents helped him open Jasmine Syrian Food, an authentic Syrian joint sandwiched between several other immigrant-owned restaurants in Aurora’s newest gastronomic bazaar. “My parents decided to leave everything in Syria — their company, their jobs, their family — to just protect me and my older brother,” Alnouri said. “I’m just hoping my parents are proud of me in the future.” Jasmine is one of half a dozen new immigrant and refugee-owned businesses that have set up shop in the new Mango House space in the former Afrikmall building at 10180 E. Colfax Ave. For the past several months, scents of Syrian shawarma have commingled with Burmese curries and Somali baked goods in the some 56,000-square-foot former furniture store that for years has struggled to find any form of commercial footing. One of the many dishes made at Urban Burma, which is at the Mango House.Photo by Philip B. Poston/Sentinel Colorado Denver real estate firm Northstar Commercial Partners bought the former Broyhill Furniture Building on East Colfax in early 2014, and sunk some $1.65 million into the property to turn it into a hub of African culture and cuisine. That concept gave up the ghost in 2016, and the pad was eventually handed to an internet TV personality who planned to turn the space into an Afro-centric cultural center. He was evicted for failing to pay rent the following year. Then in 2017, a local pastor took the reins of the space to convert it into the Aurora Hope Complex. But according to a Northstar representative, the Denver developer finally sold the property for an undisclosed sum last summer to Dr. PJ Parmar, a local physician who has gained international attention for offering medical services to Aurora’s burgeoning refugee population. “That space has not had a permanent tenant for a little while, and I’m excited that there is now a community space that includes our immigrant and refugee communities, and it’s not just a location to seek services,” said Ward I Aurora City Council Member Crystal Murillo. “I think the Mango House has had a lot of experience supporting our immigrant and refugee groups and I’m excited to see them expand to a larger space to include more community-minded organizations and businesses.” One of the many dishes made at Urban Burma, which is at the Mango House.Photo by Philip B. Poston/Sentinel Colorado Parmar wants the space to be “a place where the community and American people are coming together and eating and meeting people,” according to Diane Scanzaroli, a physician’s assistant serving as medical director of the facility’s walk-in medical clinic. The new Mango House is an amplified version of the services Parmar and other like-minded organizations have for years provided to refugees at 1532 Galena St. The new East Colfax location also houses a dental clinic, market and after-school program organized by the African Community Center. Scanzaroli said the hulking building could soon add language classes and a program that teaches refugee women how to make and sell handmade jewelry. Last weekend, the building hosted a benefit concert featuring notable Denver crooners Los Mocochetes, Anthony Ruptak, and others. Parmar has fronted many of the costs incurred while bringing the new food hall and medical clinic online, including much of the restaurant equipment, according to Siri Tan, owner of the Urban Burma restaurant, which opened at the beginning of April. Tan, who for the past several years has worked as a family navigator for Project Worthmore, said he’s so far enjoyed slinging traditional Burmese dishes — he asserts he’s the only 100-percent Burmese restaurant in the metro area — beside chefs from Sudan, Nepal, Somalia and beyond. Lamb Shank is one of the many options available at Jasmine Syrian Food, a Syrian restaurant located at the Mango House.Photo by Philip B. Poston/Sentinel Colorado “I never met people from Sudan, or people from Syria when I was in Thailand or when I was in Burma, but since I’ve moved to the States I’ve met a lot of different people, and I just love it,” he said. “I’ve been trying their food too: They eat my food, I eat their food — it’s amazing.” Both Tan and Alnouri are intent on introducing Aurorans to uncompromising dishes from their home countries: Thai-esque noodle dishes and Indian-inspired curries for the former, and carefully mashed baba ganoush for the latter. “I’ve been to a couple ‘Syrian’ places before and when I brought the food to my parents they said ‘what is that?’ They didn’t eat it. Me neither, I had to throw it away,” Alnouri said while wrinkling his nose in disgust. “Real Syrian food, to me, uses the real recipe — without changing it because you’re in the United States.” Tan, too, said he wanted to introduce American palates to the food he grew up eating — not the ubiquitous Asian fusion found in restaurants across the country. “During my five years here, nobody knew about Burmese food,” he said. “Thai and Vietnamese food is really popular here, so I really wanted to introduce Burmese food to the Denver audience.” Scanzaroli said the new food hall could serve as a figurative passport stamp for penny-pinching travelers trying to save money before embarking on journeys across the globe. “A lot of people want to go to Thailand or Nepal or different things,” she said. “But it’s right here.”

New York – What to see / do there? 2
Quote: : I stayed in Stamford city which is about 1 hour from New York city for close to 2 & half years and used to visit New York very frequently. Myself being a vegetarian, I always found the options in any type of restaurants – Indian, Italian, Ethiopian, Thai or Middle east cuisines and road side food carts as well or quick bites like Taco Bell/Chipotle. The only place where I did not find vegetarian was in steak houses. Hope you visited Lexington Avenue or Jackson Heights where there will be lot of Indian food options – pure vegetarian too One thing about NY is the cost, vegetarian food is technically the cheapest to make but it costs an arm and a leg over there, even the Gujarati pure veg hotels make food that barely qualifies as typical Indian food.. the raw materials are quite different there in taste (produce). I heard NJ is way better in that department, specially with southern cuisine.
I’m not much of a foodie, I survived there most of the time on candy bars and sugary drinks, some pizza joints customize the meal (or were open to customizing), can scrape through in most diners as well without having some offending food item in them. At my cousins house in Penn it was Indian food as usual (save for the slightly unusual taste of the produce). I cant stand eastern cuisine, same for Israeli stuff (falafels, hummus, pita breads, bagels etc). My niece is a typical Murican kid with the mayo and peanut butter so it was amusing to see.
NY is good to visit but one needs a few years to learn its layout, its so complex, the only ones I remember passing by are 51st street (Rockefeller) and 58th (POTUS tower). Not sure where Lexington was.
For the price of one meal in the Manhattan area I can eat like a king for a whole day here at home at some some great places.. that is for sure.
I will not choose hotel brand again.
Rooms is hot, food are mostly Indian cuisine
Stayed in April 2019
