How To Start A Cookbook Club February 11, 2019 By Pam Leave a Comment
If you search “Cookbook Club” online, you’re sure to find lots of posts and articles about how to start a cookbook club , why you should join a cookbook club, and what even is a cookbook club. People across America— and possibly the world— are gathering together for a combination book club/potluck that gets them out of their comfort zone, both in the kitchen and socially. For me, it started when a friend from my homeschool days posted a link on Facebook: an article about Cookbook Clubs, first written in 2015. Her caption was simply “let’s do this!” What is a Cookbook Club Our experience
It was 2017, and I hadn’t spoken to my friend for more than a few sentences in years. We lived parallel lives in our hometown, where I had returned and she had never left. Maybe it was the loneliness I felt as a stay at home mom, maybe it was the thrill of mastering a new skill. Whatever it was, I commented on the post: “I want in!”
Another of our mutual friends from our homeschooling past messaged me a few minutes later to extend a formal invitation. We were really starting a Cookbook Club. We started a Facebook group, set a date, set a location, and we waited. I like to think we were all a little nervous since most of us were novice cooks at best and all of us were still trying to get the hang of motherhood.
January rolled around, and we met at A’s house for a potluck. We all brought intriguing cookbooks to peruse and pick through for our next meeting, which would be our first official meeting. Since we do nothing in halves, we picked a traditional Indian cookbook. Our next meeting lasted six hours. The house was filled with children laughing, the smell of curries wafting from the stove, and years worth of catching-up conversation. Although I didn’t know some of the other members that day, we were all friendly by the time we left.
Since then, we’ve tackled indigenous American cooking, Israeli food, Pacific Islander cuisine, and more. We’ve gotten closer as friends, and more skilled in the kitchen. We’ve found new favorite foods and new favorite cookbooks. I’ve tried foods I had never heard of, and cooking techniques that made me cringe when I read them in the cookbook. (Just last meeting, we had duck cooked in a whole tub of lard!)
We’ve had great recipes, like my potato au gratin . We’ve had less great recipes, like a curry that was so spicy it had to be diluted with a cup of yogurt for each 1/4 cup of curry. We’ve had simple recipes, like Turkish coffee, and complex recipes, like homemade milk bun. How To Start A Cookbook Club
1. Start Small. Consider starting with a small group of about four people. That will give enough variety of dishes if everyone brings one of two offerings, but won’t be enough to overwhelm any of the cooks.
2. Consider Your Skills Are you a mix of proficient and newbie cooks? Choose a cookbook with recipes that appeal to all skill levels, like our The New Southern Cookbook.
3. Pick Cookbooks That Appeal To You and Your Friends. The beauty of a cookbook club is that it’s what YOU want. Are your friends less adventurous cooks than my lard-loving club? You can pick cookbooks that appeal to you.
4. Consider How You Want To Cook Do you hate cooking alone? Meet up with a friend or two to cook before the meet— or make the meet about cooking together!
5. Most Importantly-Don’t Stress It! Don’t stress about how your food looks. Don’t even stress about how it tastes. Cookbook Clubs are for having fun, and let’s be honest, having a night out of the house with friends.
I’m not going to be dramatic and say that our cookbook club changed my life. I can’t sit down and write a novel about what I’ve learned from it. But I look forward to it every month, and every time I visit the local used book store, I search out cookbooks that might intrigue and excite my fellow cookbook club members.
Being a new mom is hard. It can be hard to make friends in adulthood even if you aren’t also trying to raise a child. But food is the way to everyone’s heart, right? If you’re reading this, I urge you to consider— just consider— joining or forming a cookbook club. It’s my favorite way to socialize!
How do you and your friends get together? Have you ever heard of a cookbook club before? You Might Like These Posts:

CULTURAL DIFFERENCES AND SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THE AMERICANA AND AFRICAN CULTURE
Generally, a society’s social behaviour is an extract from a miscellany of factors including history, environment and the neighbourhood. These social behaviours, having been practised for long, together with the society’s longstanding customs, norms and practices are the fundamental fabric of a society’s culture. However, any variation in these social behaviours and practices ultimately leads to different cultures. On the other hand, similarities in these social behaviours and norms lead to similar cultures. America is a country known for its diverse cultures. Most people in the United States are immigrants who came from other countries across the world to occupy the world’s most dynamic nation. The American culture, however, can be said to be an infusion of the Native American, Indian, European and African cultures, making what we call the “American Culture.” In this regard, therefore, it is common to spot certain aspects of the African culture in the American culture. On the other hand, the African culture, just like the American culture, is a fusion of different cultures of people of the African origin. The African continent, like its American counterpart, was colonized by Europeans, some of whom migrated from Europe to settle on the African highlands. Others like commerce and slave trade too greatly exposed the African culture to the outside world (“America and Africa,” n.d). Therefore, it is imperative to understand the cultural similarities and differences inherent in these two cultures alongside possible measures to facilitate cementation a good relationship between these cultures. Similarities As mentioned heretofore, both the two cultures have spots of similarities between them, most of which can be ascribed to the aspect of globalization. 1. Religion Religion is an intrinsic component of a people’s culture. In fact, no culture can claim to have no religion. Therefore, religion is a fundamental aspect of the social rules and norms that people highly venerate. In the African culture, religion plays a big role in the spiritual nourishment of the people in the larger African continent. Faith is something that is found almost in every African family. Though the continent is fraught with numerous religions, Christianity is reportedly the most pervasive religion throughout the entire continent. Though the most dominant religion in the continent, it is mostly found in the Sub-Saharan Africa where most people subscribe to the Christian faith. In the Northern Africa, the most dominant religion is Islam, probably due to the high presence of the Arab community. It is important to understand that Christianity in Africa was introduced by the early missionaries. However, Islam in the region was introduced by Arab traders who plied the North African route to link into the Arab world. Similarly, Christianity was introduced in the US by the European colonialists masquerading as Missionaries. As a majorly Christian dominated society, Americans celebrate all major Christian festivities like Christmas, Good Friday, Easter Monday and Palm Sunday. During most of these celebrations, just like Africans, Americans do not report to work and instead either remain at home or join with friends to celebrate in public places. On Christmas day, for instance, like in Africa, Americans go to Church in the morning and later spend time with their families and friends. On this day, businesses remain closed. On the other hand, Muslim Americans, just like Muslim Africans, observe all the Islamic doctrines. Festivities such as Idd-Ul-Fitr are celebrated in America just like back in Africa.
2. Music Music is one of the aspects of cultural similarity between the African and American cultures. The American music today is predicated on the polyrhythmic music that originated from the individual African groups in the Western, Northern and Sub-Sharan Africa. It is necessary to understand that this cultural fusion was nurtured in slavery that sent Africans away from their motherland to the foreign world with their culture. This polyrhythmic music currently a part of the American culture is evident in the common music elements such as melisma and syncopation. During the period preceding slavery, Americans never had “Spirituals” in their culture. However, this came about as a result of the blending of the traditional European hymns with the African music elements (Pattison, 2011). The African musical forms like the jazz, blues and ragtime would later grow more popular and get incorporated as part of the American culture by 1920. Moreover, the hip hop and rap music were as a result of the blending of the two cultures. It is worth noting that the free interaction between the two cultures owing to the post-slavery period greatly impacted on the similarity we now have today of the two cultures in terms of music and art. It is widely thought that due to the acceptance of the African music forms in the European dominated American culture would enable further incorporation of African music forms like the neo soul. Therefore, the American bears in it lots of African cultural music genres and elements. Currently, the African culture, drawn from the African continent, has become an integral part of the American art culture. Further interaction of the two cultures is deemed to have a greater impact on the American culture being that currently it is adversely affected. 3. Language Language is one of the distinctive factors that define a given culture. As a result, no culture can claim to exist without having a distinctive language spoken by member of that particular society. The African American Vernacular English is a creation of the African-American people. The language reportedly came into existence as a result of the intentional mixing of the African slaves who, though from the same ancestral provenience, spoke different languages. The only option, therefore, was English. Since most of them were not educated at the time, speaking the standard American English proved a great challenge thereby forcing them to adopt a dialect somewhat similar to the American dialect but with a closer relation to the native African accent. To-date, there are still African-Americans who cannot speak the standard American English but instead heavily rely on this AAVE dialect. 4. The Art As the slaves were being drawn from West and Central parts of Africa, the did not forget to move with their artistic skills and abilities. The African art work has contributed immensely to the development of the American art work. Today, forms of art like drums, wrought-iron figures and quilts can be spotted in the American art culture. These forms are similar to the artefacts found in West and Central Africa. For instance, an African-American by the name Harriet Powers form Georgia made quilts that were profoundly similar to what the West African ones. His work has been touted to be one of the finest quilts works of the South side. Most of these African-American artefacts sprung up in the American Libraries and Museums shortly after the Civil War, thanks to the Harlem Renaissance that saw the majority European Americans give way to the African-American artwork (Walker, 2001).
In the succeeding years, institutions such as the Harmon Foundation greatly motivated the artwork of the African culture, most of which gained prominence in the American museums thereby harvesting good reputations for the already dehumanized African-Americans. However, it is fundamentally in order to understand that African-Americans had to undergo a lot of frustrations and discouragement from their European counterparts to have their artistic works recognized. The Highwaymen, for instance, had to ignore the discriminative rule by their white counterparts requiring them to sell their pieces of artwork through the art agents and galleries than directly selling their works to the public. They instead embarked on a mission to peddle their idylls to the American public. Today, their works can fetch up-to thousands of dollars in the American market. Dance is another component of art that the two cultures share. What is currently known as the African-American dance had its original form in the traditional African dances in the West and Central Africa. Just like back in their ancestral homeland, the African-American dance is major aspect of the African-Americans’ daily life. In most cases, the dance is evident in most celebrations similarly to its application in Africa. Some of the traditional aspects of the African dance like “get down” have become an intrinsic part of the American culture. While in its earlier introduction into the American dance podiums was a constant ridicule, Lindy Hop dance widely caught the attention of the white American society who have today embraced it as part of their culture. African-American dancers like Bill Robinson did a great deal to popularize the African-American dances in the United States. Another dance form associated with the African culture is the turfing, a unique dance which traces its roots in the deep Savannas of West Africa. Therefore, the today’s American dance share lots of feature with the African dance. A similarity that cannot be overlooked.
Moreover, cultural similarity between the American and African cultures can be well traced in the American literature, which today has lots of features of the African literature. Drawn from Africa and exported to the United States during slave trade, African fables, poems and riddles were performed in the American theatres. As result, most African-Americans became writers and authored their own history and experience in the foreign land. African-American writers like Phillip Wheatly and Langston Hughes espoused literature to write poems as well as perform folktales, tricksters and riddles. Today, the African-American culture which is part of the American culture, is fraught with elements drawn from African literature. 5. Fashion and Dressing Today, with globalization, there is very little distinctive features between various cultures in terms of dressing and fashion. Though today there is huge cultural similarity in terms of aesthetics between the African and American culture, it must be understood that several years ago the two cultures shared very little in terms of dressing and aesthetics. In the wake of 1960, a group of African-Americans blended West African traditional fashion with elements of the American fashion to come up with a distinctive African-American traditional style. Today, Americans make cloths from African textiles like “Kente” drawn from the West African communities like Ashanti of Ghana and the Ewe. The fabric is currently used to make most of American neatly woven casual T-shirts and bow ties. Traditional African clothing, therefore, have become a brand of its own owing to its wide acceptance into the American fashion style. Today, Americans wear jewellery with forms and style from West Africa, most of which are made with the African beads and Adinkra motifs. Today, many African women style their hair like the American women. This borrowing of cultural aspect has been widely accepted and today, almost every woman in Africa puts on the western hair. However, some American women too have borrowed from the African hairstyling especially drawn from Ghana and Nigeria. African women are known for their voluptuous body shapes which most American women have seen too attractive and begun to copy. Therefore, there has been borrowing from both cultures in terms of fashion and aesthetics, thereby drawing a lot of similarities between the two cultures. 6. Cuisine One cannot talk about cultural similarities between the American and African cultures without talking of the cuisine. There is huge presence of the African traditional recipes in the United States which today form part of the growing American culture. African foods like the “gumbo” and ugali have become widely accepted in the American society. Over the recent years, East African foods like sukuma wiki, ugali, chapati, nyama-choma, pilau, okra, among many others, have gained wide recognition and acceptance in the American society. This has been as a result of the immigration of most East Africans from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda to the United States. In their migration, they carry along with them their cuisine culture, which currently has influenced the American cuisine culture. Other prominent American dishes with a trace of the African origin are soul foods which are normally made of inexpensive ingredients drawn from farming and fishing. The African-American foods today include fried chicken, macaroni, fried fish, pork and cheese and cornbread, all of which have their origin form the ancestral homeland in Africa. Therefore, there is a huge semblance of both cultures in terms of cuisines, with most of African foods forming part of the American cuisine culture.
Differences While both Africa and America share a myriad of cultural aspects, there exist similarly varied aspects of culture between them. Religious Values and Perspective 1. Traditional Spiritualism Religion in the African traditional set up is the navel around which every activity revolves. Africans are more spiritual compared to Americans who seem to be less spiritual and secular. According to the African values, there is always the Supreme Being who is invisible and powerful. Religion in the African society is embedded in strong spiritual values beliefs that are being passed from one generation to the next. This religiosity comes with fear being installed among the souls of members of the African society to ensure strict adherence. Traditionally, before the coming of the Missionaries and introduction of Christianity, African ethnic groups had their own gods to whom they worshipped and highly venerated. Failing to pay respect to these gods would mean serious punitive measures including banishment from those particular societies (Tiony, 2009). The African religious values also defined right and wrong, good and bad. These, however, were strongly anchored in the strict moral values that dictated the conduct of members of the society. In most cases, failing to adhere to the set code of conduct would invite bad spirits which would offer punishment on behalf of the society. This, therefore inflicted a lot of fear in the members of those particular societies who would always strive not to provoke anger of the bad spirits. There is also the worship of different deities on different days. This shows how religious peoples of the African origin are. This is quite different from the American society which is less spiritual and autonomous. The American culture is generally secular and allows individuals to act independently. In the traditional African setup, there were sorcerers and diviners who were charged with the responsibility of directly communicating with the gods. They had the powers of clairvoyance and foretell of future events (Tiony, 2009). They could bring messages of happiness and joy as well as cast spell among errant members of the society. In most cases, the presence of diviners and sorcerers meant spell and therefore, people feared to do wrong as they feared being exposed by the sorcerers. These were not in the American society. 2. Evangelism and Modern Christianity In terms of evangelism, Americans uphold the philosophy of individualism as opposed to Africans who seem to do things communally. For instance, an Africans are more willing to reach out to the inactive members of their Church and speak to them the Word of God than Americans. This is because, most of the White Americans profess the individualism and materialism philosophically. In such a case, no may of the white Americans will turn up to evangelize. This is a cultural attitude of the White Americans who inherited it from their ancestors back in Europe. Moreover, this perspective of the white society in America has greatly impacted on the worldview of the black society in the Country. Unlike the Whites who were absconding tyranny in Europe, Blacks came to America in chains against their will. Since they were drawn from different regions of the Continent and this meant different ethnic societies with different languages, they faced the common problem of communication among themselves. There was no common language (Tiony, 2009). The White society, their master at the time, leveraged this and influenced their worldview perspective that cherished individualism. Today, most Back-Americans have adopted the White way of thinking thereby fitting in the American cultural society. Their ideas were greatly influenced by existing social and political institutions in North America. However, back in Africa, the traditional perspective on how they view the world is still held sway in most parts of the Continent.
To clarify this; White people debated the rationalism of baptizing an infant with regards to free will and volition; Black people instead are more concerned with biblical recitation on God instructing Moses to lead his people from bondage in Egypt into Canaan. Whites strive to develop logical questions theology and science while trying to take an objective view of the world. Blacks instead are more concerned on their status in the United States, how they are viewed by other races and their fight for equality. They establish connection between the biblical Israelites who were exculpated from dungeons by God and themselves. They believe that if God exonerated the Israelites who were enslaved, then the same has for them a great future in the United States. In fact, some see the presidency of Barrack Obama as some of the great promises God has fulfilled for them in the foreign land. In their perspective, Blacks view salvation as eschatological and more about non-abstract things like their earthly oppression. However, Whites hold that salvation is spiritual and sometimes abstracted with rationalism but is usually disassociated with the worldly struggle for justice and freedom. It was due to this variation in perspective of salvation that the Whites saw nothing wrong with enslaving the Blacks. According to the Whites, Jesus Christ is a spiritual Saviour who delivers his people form sin and ultimate punishment of death. On the other hand, Blacks view Jesus Christ as the World Liberator. It was due to this reason that many Blacks participated in the Civil Rights Movement because they believed if God delivered Israelites from Pharaoh’s wickedness, Prophet Daniel from lion’s pit and Noah from the storm then God would ultimately delver them from their captivity in the United States. On communality, Africans believe that the ultimate question Jesus would ask each individual would be, “How many sheep did you bring to the fold?” This question always inspires African Christians to always strive to visit not only their families but also strangers to exchange the Word of God. They will always sacrifice other things to ensure they convince the inactive into Church and knowing God (Walker, 2001). This is obviously different from the American culture the expression “each one for himself and God for us all” is stridently institutionalized. The Americans believe that salvation is individual and the individual has the freedom to choose whether to get saved or not. They believe that God will judge people based on their individual characters without any necessary connection with others. To contrast it with the African view, God will ask the question of what an individual did as opposed to what an individual did not do. 3. Modern Worship Worship is another aspect of culture where the two cultural societies greatly vary. In the local African churches, there are established choirs. These choirs sing manifold songs during a church service. On the other hand, churches in America, especially the White society, have choirs that only sing one special music. In most cases in the White America, church members prefer attending a Church service for one hour. This is quite different from the African Church in which members do not mind spending up to five hours in Church. Most church services in the White American society end at noon. However, in Africa, services end between noon and 4pm. In terms of sermons, most White Americans prefer sermons that do not exceed 20 minutes. This is in contrast to Africa, where people prefer sermons lasting for up to 1 hour (Finley & Alexander, 2009). In the same vein if a church service should start at 10am in a church dominated by White Americans, the congregants will be seated by 9.45 am waiting for the sermon to begin. However, if a Church is Africa sets it sermon time at 10am, the congregants will start coming at 10am and be settled at 10.45am, delaying the service. It is worth noting that this variance in interpretation of time greatly depends on the cultural understanding of the aspect of time by both cultures. This can directly be linked to the concept of time. In the mind of the White Americans, time is viewed as a material thing that yields money, hence the common phrases “time is money and there is no hurry in Africa.” (Freston, n.d.) In the mind of an African, however, time is an opportunity that should be used to build and improve relationships with one another hence the common phrase “take your time.” In this context, time should be used to share with friends one’s personal experiences and forge a long-lasting relationship with them. Generally, to put it in perspective, while the African perspective of the world is more spiritual, the American culture tends to be more scientific and takes an objective view of the world. The African worldview sees God as the Supreme Whole who lives far away. This is quite different to the American worldview which sees God as a Supreme Being who does not live far away. These, therefore are two different religious perspectives held by the two different cultures.
Social Values Social values in both the African culture and the American culture differ variedly. This is due to wide variation in beliefs, norms, mores, customs and attitudes. In the traditional African set-up there established routine roles for specific gender. There roles that can only be done by female and those that can only be done by males. For instance, it is a taboo for a lady to climb a tree as this would expose her to the risk of falling due to her weak physique compared to that of the male gender. The American culture, on the other hand, is a little bit relaxed less strict and almost every member whatever they feel like at their discretion. This, probably is due to the lack of the unifying culture within the American society. Though, the African culture is varied due to numerous ethnic groups from different backgrounds inhabiting the continent, some of the social values are similar in almost all the African traditional ethnic groups. Some of these common values included respect to the elderly. In almost all of the ethnic groups of African descent, respect to the elderly was paramount and strict. While this is almost common across all cultures of the world, in the African society it is highly emphasized. 1. Behaviour There is a great variation in terms of the acceptable mode of behaviour between these two cultures. While African-Americans seem to be more assertive, interpersonal and confrontational during arguments, White Americans tend to be more dispassionate and low-keyed. African-Americans tend to like asserting themselves by proving a point. However, White Americans minimize their confrontational nature in order to avoid a heated argument that may lead to a hard-line position or recalicitrance/intransigence. This is probably because most White Americans fear adopting hard line positions while most African-Americans prefer speaking their views with the hope that at the end of the argument either of them will have their views formalized as the right position. Moreover, most African-Americans tend to be confrontational in nature, probably owing to their inherent historical anger of being enslaved as well as the aspects they inherited form their forefathers back in Africa. Furthermore, the feeling of discontent with how the American society has treated them could also be a contributing factor to this mode of behaviour.
Moral Values The African culture, just like the American culture is anchored very stridently aggressive moral considerations. Moral values are what dictate a people’s character in the society. However, morals values vary depending on which culture they are being applied. This is true to the extent that what is considered moral a given society may be considered immoral in another society, or what is considered immoral in one society may not be immoral in the other society. In the African culture, for instance, one has to abide by the set values in order to live long and avert any possible curses by the bad spirits. Some of these values are similar in both cultures. For instance, fornication, adultery, stealing are insults considered as immoral behaviour in both cultures. However, certain practices in these societies are regarded as either moral or immoral based on where they are being practised. Lesbianism and Gaysm, is a common practice in the American society which is not seen as an immoral behaviour. However, in the African society, neither gaysm nor lesbianism is approved in the traditional African culture. In fact, the laws proscribing these practices are so strict that no one of the society members should be suspected of engaging in, practising or aiding these outlawed forms of behaviour. Despite many gay rights defendants’ efforts to promote gay/lesbian practice in the African continent, not even as single Black African country has relented its position to reconsider such practices. This is in direct contrast to the American society, where members publicly admit to be practising gaysm and lesbianism. The African society is so strict to safeguard what it considers moral values and external influences by foreign cultures. However, it must not be misconstrued that there are no members of the African society who practise gaysm and lesbianism. There are a manifold who subscribe to the western thought that gaysm should be an individual decision and not subject to approval by the society. Conversely, the traditional African society had sorcerers, soothsayer and diviners who were highly venerated in the society. These people were considered to be a link between the people and the invincible Superior Power. In some cases, they tasked with casting spell on the errant members of the society. However, in the traditional American society set-up, practising sorcery was highly prohibited as they were associated with evil. It was immoral to be as sorcerer in this society. Consequences would amount to seclusion and banishment from the society; sometimes even death. From the above examples, we can see that moral values vary according to the cultural foundational principles on which they are embedded, and the society in which they are applied.
Other Aspects of Cultural Difference Whenever an American visits an African country, there will always be a culture shock. This is normally due to the huge variance in simple aspects of culture between the two worlds. These can range from greeting to eating. For instance, in the traditional African culture, you only greet using the right hand. Greeting someone using the left-hand is deemed to imply disrespect. If you are greeting an elderly person, you are obliged to stop whatever you are doing and shake their hand while slightly bowing as a sign respect. In this case, in the American culture, while respect was expected of a younger person to be accorded to an elderly person, it did not dictate which hand is to be used as a show of respect. Furthermore, it should be borne that the American culture is very liberal and does not prescribe the punishment to be meted out to the member who is suspected of violating the set code of behaviour by the society.
Recommendations for better relationship between Americans and Africans Integrating the two cultures is a responsibility that all of us must join hands in order to achieve. It summons a concerted effort by members of both societies to engage openly and candidly about the mutual problems that promote the bad relations between the races. The integration of both cultures into a universal culture that can be called the American culture is just but one-way Blacks and Whites in the United States can adopt to ensure a long-lasting race relation (“Exposing Bias: Race and Racism in America,” 2017). It must, however, be borne that poor relations between the two cultures dates back to the period of pre-colonialism when wildly irate European tradesmen kidnaped and drove Africans from their motherland into a foreign land, brutally flogged and forced them to labour on their farmlands with very little pay. In order to forge ahead, therefore, we must not forget where we have come from. It is important that the current generation, which was not present when these acts of injustice were being meted out on Africans, put their differences including culture, colour, religion and historical background aside to concentrate on ways that will build amity and friendship among them. Therefore, in this section, I will comprehensively look into what we must do in order to build a monistic society that incorporates both Africans and Europeans into the American society. Recommendations (a). Multiculturalism. This is one of the most fundamental steps we must undertake to address the imbalance of the current American society. It simply is “equal co-existence of different cultural forms of life within one and the same political community” (Shabani, 2003). It is one of the most achievable and practical to ensure incorporation of the marginalized (African-Americans) into the larger American society. It does this through expanding the contingency for acceptance as well as understanding of the minority group by the majority group to achieve a more cohesive society anchored in shared cultures. Multiculturalism develops a striving grandeur to eradicate any existing forms of hierarchy and group supremacy (Williams, 2001). Under this arrangement, multiculturalism ensures that groups; African-Americans, White Americans, Indian Americans, Hispanic Americans as well as Native Americans are not only understood, but their culture recognized and embraced as part of the larger American culture. Multiculturalism, in its original form, institutionalizes the norm of political, social and economic inclusion of all the groups involved. It creates a society anchored in the belief and trust of each individual member and the overarching philosophy of the Ubuntu that says “I am who I am because we are” (“Thank you for talking to me, Africa: Multiculturalism and black urban America,” n.d.). This ideology, therefore, reminds each member of this particular society of the worth of the next person regardless of their weakness and mistakes. In this world, all citizens are equal, and they each other as so. There are no first-class nor second-class citizens. Everyone is acknowledged and embraced the way they are their race, culture, skin, sex and religion notwithstanding. If, under the current cultural arrangement of the American society someone is advancing the ideology of white superiority and promoting group domination over other races, then it is the responsibility of multiculturalism to disband such institutions off the American society (Sullivan, 2014). It teaches us that our shared history of humanity is much superior than the physical skin colour, sex and religion that currently divide us. It is a powerful scythe that cuts off the unjust institutions of racial domination and cultural discrimination from the face of the American society. Multiculturalism breeds in us the idea that we must suffer in order to pluck off the bad from our society and replace it with the good that we strive to achieve. It requires us to embrace solidarity and love for not only our families, friends and relatives but everyone under the sun. It is therefore, a universal concept that if embraced, the world will be a better place for everyone. It is also worth understanding that multiculturalism feeds in us moral values and principles that dismiss completely identity politics but supplant interethnic cooperation among members of the wider society. Let it be known that multiculturalism is not only about recognizing and acknowledging people’s identities but also identifying their problems in order to seek a unilateral solution for social inclusion. Contrary to the widespread opinion that multiculturalism weakens instructions of democracy within the society, multiculturalism strengthens the socio-political institutions by eliminating the lopsided system of racial superiority. Finally, multiculturalism must be adopted because it strengthens our will to act and empowers us to live harmoniously with other people from other cultures regardless of how vastly different, we seem to be from them. Denying multiculturalism is denying the very foundations on which America is established. Therefore, it is a momentous ideology that must be embraced by all to achieve a fully transformed, cohesive American society. (b). Justice. The American society is widely known as a racially unjust society. Eliminating racial injustice and replacing it with racial justice may seem intractable especially in a society where unfairness and injustice is treated to people of colour on a daily basis. One of the surer ways to conquer such realities is practise imaginings of a just society where everyone is treated equally. This is the first step to ensuring personal resistance to the status quo. It refutes the claim that says “well, this is how it has been; there is nothing we can do.” Most rights commentaries point that fighting racial injustice today is more difficult than it was during the times of heightened civil rights activism since then it was legally accepted; it was ‘concrete.’ Today, racial injustice is like an abstract idea only evidenced in one’s imagination (Brankston, 2000). It is ghostlike, therefore, confronting it will need more efforts. Recognizing this, therefore, one’s memory is provoked to recognize the need for a strong egalitarian, multiracial and multicultural civil rights movement to reawaken the anger of the victims of racial injustice to demand for equal rights. However, achieving this needs selfless individuals who care not much about how the public will perceive them of their stand nor the actions that the government may pursue against his civil disobedience. It must be borne that disrupting the normal order of the status quo of cultural injustice is one of the initial steps that a truly committed and engaged civil rights movement must be poised to undertake (Chase & Collier, 1970). The current America’s order is that which has been made to welcome and accept racial injustice as an aspect of its culture. Therefore, an organised disruption will confuse the institutions that support this system on the defence mechanism they should employ as there currently are no laws to warrant racism. Defeating the institution through an organized movement will therefore, realized, however, may be after a period of time. Moreover, it is widely thought within the academic cycles that racial justice will open up more democratic space as societies with less justice are known to stifle dissent. This will even be good news in expanding freedom of expression and speech for the wider American society. With this, a new standard for evaluating patriotism will emerge (Davis, 2006). A standard that will foster one’s efforts in his bid to realize a multiculturally unified American society rather that which teaches our children to approve of everything the political class feed us with. It will be a system that promotes hard-work among the people while at the same time discouraging too much materialism knowing that there is always a neighbour at the next door whom I am bound to share with. It will streamline our economic ideology as a nation to realize extreme materialism is indeed of no good in a multicultural society where people are concerned about the welfare of others. With this, we can be sure that America will be forced to frame policies that will look at the economic muscle of its minority and ensure equitable distribution of the country’s resource for their empowerment. Currently, the most unjust institution in the American governance structure is the criminal system. This unchecked lopsided justice system has, instead of fostering equal rights to every American, sent many members of the minority groups such the African-American community to jail. Courtesy of this system, many Americans have been sent to jail without necessarily adjudicating their case in a manner it would be done to a member of the White-American society. With the establishment of a multiculturally racially just society, many of the discrepancies we see today in the legal and justice system like the rash criminalizing of Blacks and association of Arabs to terrorism will be a thing of the historical past. Racial justice will launch a dangerous assault on the racially imbalanced institutions of the American society to ensure a fulfilling society that incorporates all members in its political, economic and social institutions (Walker, Spohn, & DeLone, 2011). Due to this, people will develop a sense of contentment with the governance structure, thereby rallying behind it full support for the maximization of the opportunity utilization for enjoyment by all members of the American society. This system will equitable distribution of resources like in Education and the Health sector thereby ensuring that members of this society are well-educated and have good health coverage. Finally, a racially just society where every member views and treats each other respect will ensure the renewal of the concept of the American Dream, contrary to what it is currently. (c). Intelligence. There is nothing as good as a nation where every aspect of the society behaves and operates intelligently. In Philosophy, intelligence is more concerned with one’s capacity to practise good judgement of events and circumstances despite manifold challenges that may threaten to hinder the exercise of good judgement (Minkov, 2012). Moreover, some scholars view intelligence as the power to emerge successful in new and confronting situations. In this context, therefore, intelligence tests how adaptive we are to the challenging situations. Cultural discrimination, closely tied to racial injustice, is one of those forms of domination that requires proactivity and intelligence to counter. It is a challenging practice that if not addressed intelligently may manipulate truth to achieve its desired ends-befuddling the public and offering opposition to any efforts unleashed to eradicate it. With the concept of racial intelligence, people will develop the need to establish a society based on the principles of racial justice and multiculturalism (Galston, 2018). It will open up people’s minds to do more research in sciences in order to enquire why there are still systems of social inequality in our society. These new ideas will challenge or replace the current theories, offering better solutions to the existing challenges that currently confront human beings. A racially intelligent society will be totally different from the one we have today, offering expansive policy-based solutions to world problems like global warming (Kasinitz, 2019). How wonderful will it be to hear that an everlasting solution to global warming has been found! This kind of society, therefore, will ensure maximum and equal opportunities for every American regardless of whether you are truck driver, tutor, janitor or a CEO. Other possible recommendations that need to be implemented for a culturally just society include adopting the Christian philosophy of love; loving very member of the American society regardless of their race, skin, culture and religion, the White society to seek forgiveness of the Black community for their mistreatment. -this is a scar that cannot be eroded as long as forgiveness is sought and a renewed sense of confidence, love and mutual heritage is achieved by both the White American and Black American society. Conclusion In conclusion, having assessed the cultural similarities and differences between American and African cultures, and given recommendations on the way forward, it is now a civil responsibility bestowed upon each member of the American society, regardless of the race, colour of skin, religion and sex, to ensure that we promote actions that will redound into the implementation of these proposals for a multiculturally racially just American society. Cole Haan BrandVoice: How To Eat More Plant-Based Foods
ColeHaan.com and follow @ColeHaan .
We’ve all heard that eating more plants helps protect the planet and our health, that it will give us more energy and help ward off obesity and disease.
A vegan meal at CAVA. CAVA
The reality can be a little trickier, especially when you’re accustomed to a diet heavy in meat and cheese. Or when you’re pressed for time and starving.
Perhaps you want to eat more vegetables, but are not sure how to cook them.
Good news: Taking small, accessible steps to increase your plant consumption can have rewards beyond improving your health. Dare we say you might enjoy eating even more than you did before?
Here are five simple tips that share the same root advice: Explore .
1. Explore a new cuisine
Eating more vegetables may seem daunting when your choices are limited or boring. You can solve this problem by seeking out cuisines that emphasize flavorful vegetarian options. Plant-forward eating out doesn’t have to be involved or expensive, particularly if you opt for fast-casual restaurants.
Is there a Greek, Mediterranean or Middle Eastern restaurant near you? The menu probably has an array of wonderful plant-based dishes, including options made with zucchini, chickpeas and fava beans, as well as lush eggplant or pepper dips. Look out for Cava (the New York, Austin and Los Angeles areas) or The Hummus and Pita Co. (New York and, soon, Los Angeles).
Indian food is also wonderful for vegetarians, with a variety of dals (aromatic lentil stews), saags (curries made with spinach or other greens) and samosas (filled pastries). Consider Curry Up Now (the Bay Area), Naansense (Chicago) or Indikitch (New York).
2. Explore a meal-delivery service
Unsure of how to begin cooking vegetarian food? Gain inspiration from one of the popular services that deliver all of the ingredients needed to cook a recipe — most have lively vegetarian options. Purple Carrot delivers entirely vegan ingredients, with creative recipes such as beet noodles with romanesco and hazelnut-hemp seed crumble.
Beet noodles. Purple Carrot
Vegetarian and/or vegan plans are also available from HelloFresh , Green Chef and many others. If you dislike cooking, look into a service such as Veestro , which delivers ready-made plant-based frozen dinners that you can simply heat and eat.
3. Explore the growing world of plant-based milks
You probably knew you could swap out your dairy milk for almond or coconut milk. But the world of packaged plant-based milks has become even more exciting lately. For instance, many coffee drinkers now swear by Oatly , an oat milk so trendy that it’s struggled to keep up with demand. Califia Farms offers a variety of almond milk-based products such as Chocolate Coconut Almondmilk, as well as flavored dairy-free creamers and almond milk mixed with cold-brew coffee. And for creamy treats, there’s even more variety than ever in the world of coconut milk ice cream and dairy-free yogurt.
The creamy, buttery texture of avocados make them a great substitute for mayonnaise and creamy salad dressings.
4. Explore the world of avocados — on their own or as swaps
Picture-perfect avocado toasts have long been filling up our social-media feeds. But did you know you could also swap avocado for mayonnaise? That’s a favorite technique of Jules Aron , a bestselling cookbook author, wellness coach and nutritionist.
The creamy, buttery texture of avocados make them a great substitute for mayonnaise and creamy salad dressings, Aron explained. “Plus, they are a great source of healthy monounsaturated fatty acids that will keep you feeling full, longer.”
5. Explore supermarket aisles
First, take a swing down the produce aisle and look for something you haven’t tried — or items that can be prepared with little fuss. How about a baked whole sweet potato or some pre-cut, ready-to-roast vegetables that can be tossed with the dried herbs in your pantry?
Then, head to the frozen-vegetable aisle and pick from veggie tots, riced cauliflower, carrot “noodles,” fire-roasted corn … This is one place where impulse buys can be guilt-free.
By exploring even just a few of these options, you’ll be well on your way to making healthier, more delicious choices every day.

A former balti house owner ‘put lives at risk’ by serving up a ‘peanut-free’ dish which contained enough of a trace to trigger an anaphylactic reaction, a court heard.
The potentially fatal situation at B68 Indian Cuisine and Takeway in Oldbury was uncovered by Sandwell Council’s Trading Standards team in December last year.
Officers were carrying out checks across the borough to ensure takeaway and restaurant bosses were complying with strict rules on food allergens and food labelling.
Tests discovered the lamb korma and rice dish, which was advertised by the Hagley Road West eatery as being peanut-free, actually contained more than 40g per kg of peanuts.
Experts said this would easily be enough to cause an anaphylactic reaction – which can result in death – in someone allergic to peanuts.
However Birmingham Magistrates Court was told it was not known how the meal became contaminated with peanut as Reza Ul-Islam, the former director of B68 Indian Cuisine Ltd, had failed to co-operate with Trading Standards during the investigation. Mr Ul-Islam pleaded guilty to food offences on February 7 and was given a 12 month community order.
When passing sentence, magistrates said they were taking the matter “very seriously” because he had been “playing with human life”.
He was also ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work and must pay the prosecution costs of £1,995, plus a victim surcharge of £85.
Councillor Elaine Costigan, Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for public health and protection, said: “It’s shocking to think of a business serving food to members of the public putting someone’s life at risk in this way.
“We’ve all heard of the tragic, but thankfully rare, circumstances of people who have died or become seriously ill after they’ve eaten something without knowing it contains a substance they are allergic to.
“Only recently a teenage girl died after unknowingly eating a baguette that contained sesame seeds – it just shows how dangerous this can be.
“Businesses are legally required to warn customers about any allergens in food. If a business can’t guarantee a meal doesn’t contain an allergen, then they shouldn’t be serving it.
“Our trading standards team do vital work in keeping us all safe when we’re eating out and I want to congratulate them for bringing this prosecution. I dread to think of the consequences had someone with a peanut allergy eaten this dish.”
Between September nd December 2017, 40 premises were visited across Sandwell and three sold meals that contained dangerous levels of peanuts.
A further two meals tested contained trace levels of peanut but not at a high enough level to cause a reaction. Read More
