Amid Robson Street evictions, India Gate Restaurant to close after 41 years

Amid Robson Street evictions, India Gate Restaurant to close after 41 years by Craig Takeuchi 3:26 PM 1 of 7 2 of 7
It’s the end of an era as one of Vancouver’s longest-running Indian restaurants, along with several other neighbouring independent businesses, is facing eviction.
Rachhpal Gupta opened India Gate in the downtown core on February 1, 1978, at 616 Robson Street, specializing in northern Indian cuisine. His son, Gurmeet Gupta, took ownership in 2011, although his father still works at the restaurant.
By phone, Gurmeet Gupta told the Georgia Straight that the dining room, which spans 2,300 square feet and seats up to 86 patrons, has remained relatively the same during its lengthy run at the venue, although they did renovate the interior in 2011.
Gupta said that over the years, the menu, which draws upon family recipes, has also remained relatively the same, with its focus on traditional Punjabi cuisine. India Gate Restaurant
The menu spans a range of dishes from biryani (mixed rice plates) and paneer dishes to tandoori and seafood curry. Among their most popular dishes, Gupta said, have been butter chicken ( murg makhani ), korma , and lamb dishes.
Of the latter, Gupta said he noticed that lamb has “really taken off” over the past 12 to 15 years, which he chalks up to shifts in diversity in the population, including more people from countries where lamb is more commonly eaten.
In addition, he has also observed a heightened demand for vegetarian food over the past five years.
As traditional as they may have been, the restaurant embraced technological change, even becoming Vancouver’s first restaurant to accept Bitcoin, starting in May 2013. India Gate Restaurant
Unfortunately, Gupta said that about a year ago, they received their eviction notice for July 31.
A 13-storey building is proposed for the 600 block of Robson Street, extending from Seymour Street to the alleyway prior to Granville Street. A development application was submitted on December 18, 2018, and has been scheduled for the city’s development permit board on April 29.
The development will affect several other independent and long-running businesses on the block, including Time Frame Gallery (600 Robson Street), which opened in 1977; Red Burrito (606 Robson Street); Simon’s Bike Shop (608 Robson Street), which opened in 1986; and City Cannabis Co. (610 Robson Street), which began as Vancity Weed.
Gupta said that they are looking for a new location but nothing is certain so far.
However, they do have two locations in Mexico: a restaurant in Puerto Vallarta, which has operated for eight years, and a food truck in Guadalajara, which launched in 2015.
“We’d like to thank everybody in the community for their support over the last 41 years and for letting us be a big part of the community,” Gupta said. You can follow Craig Takeuchi on Twitter at @cinecraig or on Facebook . RELATED STORIES

There’s so much more to underrated Cheltenham than a day at the races

There’s so much more to underrated Cheltenham than a day at the races Harriet O’Brien This is an elegant gem of a destination that oozes cultured charm – istock More And they’re off – or very nearly so. Tens of thousands of people are preparing to descend on Cheltenham for one of the biggest fixtures in British horse racing. The Cheltenham Festival runs from March 12-15 this year, and each of its four days typically attracts crowds of some 60,000. Yet for all the buzz at the race course, the Regency heart of this Cotswold town remains pretty much empty during Festival days. Which is a shame, for this is an elegant gem of a destination that oozes cultured charm. Cheltenham looks terrific in the watery sunshine of early spring. The glory of the town is in its early 19th-century buildings, so the first thing on your list should be an architectural wander. It’s remarkable how much the pillars, porticos and pediments of the past have an uplifting effect. Start in the Tivoli and Suffolks area to the south – the Earl of Suffolk developed this from farmland in a flurry of construction in the 1830s – for some of the most refined residences in town, complete with wrought-iron balconies and big, beautiful windows. Heading north to the town centre, saunter through the gracious Montpellier district where caryatids – Grecian-style pillars of sculpted females – add funky flourishes to several properties. Just up from a proud parade of these embellishments is the Grade I-listed Rotunda building, which evolved from a spa established in 1809, and which since December 2017 has been home to The Ivy restaurant. In the 19th century Montpellier Spa was one of six or so places where the great, the good and the sick flocked to take Cheltenham’s mineral waters and this route will take you past the well-clipped Montpellier Gardens and neighbouring Imperial Gardens, where many of the town’s other festivals take place – jazz in May, science in June, music at the end of June and literature in October. Next is a stroll along the Promenade, an avenue built in the 1820s which still exudes grandeur. Take a stroll along the Promenade to see Neptune’s fountain Credit: istock More Cheltenham offers a generous choice of cafes, from Carluccio’s to Cotswolds favourite Huffkins. Head down Regent Street for a stop at The Find which, neatly, is a sort of 21st-century version of a Regency coffee house . With its period cornicing and zany wallpaper it’s a chic social hub that serves locally sourced food (even wine from nearby Poulton Hill vineyard) and also provides co-working desk space on its top floor. Nearby, just off the sweep of the Royal Circus, is the town’s museum, The Wilson, which is renowned for its Arts & Crafts collection – a room of exquisite furniture and homeware by Ernest Gimson, William Morris and more – which you can easily get lost in for a good hour or so. It would be impossible not to get sidetracked here: by the founding collection of Flemish art, by a wonderful Stanley Spencer, by an absorbing archive room with changing exhibitions of local history, and most of all by the poignant watercolours and story of Edward Wilson. Scientist, artist and explorer, Wilson was born in Cheltenham in 1872 and died with Captain Scott on his fateful Antarctic expedition in 1912. The surrounding countryside isn’t too shabby either Credit: Getty More Story continues Another national hero was born in Cheltenham just two years after Edward Wilson. The composer Gustav Holst spent his early life at 4 Clarence Road, a relatively modest Regency house 10 minutes’ walk from The Wilson. The name of the Holst Birthplace Museum doesn’t convey the charm and scope of this little establishment. Of course you see Holst memorabilia, from the composer’s music scores to his gramophone and even the piano on which he composed The Planets. You also get an absorbing insight into life in the town at the time – the tiny third-floor bedroom of the maid, and the back-breaking labour evidently involved in running the basement kitchen and laundry, is particularly striking. Rather interestingly, in Holst’s lifetime Clarence Road and the surrounding area were known as ‘the Anglo-Indian’s paradise’ because of the number of retired employees from the East India Company – and subsequently the British Raj – who had taken up residence there. In keeping with Cheltenham’s resourceful spirit, there’s a Curry and Colonels walking tour that takes place in spring and summer. This involves being led by ebullient actor Phil Collins, dressed as 18th-century entrepreneur Henry Skillicorne, who established the town’s first spa. Among other locations, the tour stops the Queens Hotel, site of the Imperial Spa, and the ornate Pittville Pump Room, where Cheltenham’s mineral water can still be sampled – at no cost. The trip ends, rather suitably, with a tasting of Indian cuisine at the Spice Lodge restaurant. The ornate Pittville Pump Room Credit: istock More If you want to ring the changes from Regency riches, this year you can join a walking tour that marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Brian Jones. The Rolling Stones founder was born and grew up in Cheltenham and this trip provides a feel of the town in the 1950s and 60s, with stops including the site of the Odeon cinema where the Stones played in 63 and 65, and St Mary’s Church where Jones’s funeral took place. For an up-to-the-moment take on the town, call in on Dunkertons Organic Cider on the eastern edge of Cheltenham. The stylish shop and cider mill offers guided tours and is a family business that moved here from Herefordshire in late 2018. It’s partly owned by Julian Dunkerton, who co-founded the fashion label Superdry in Cheltenham and who has made a huge impact on the town with his boutique hotel group Lucky Onion . This has several sleek new properties in the pipeline; a welcome development for the town since hotel beds are in short supply, particularly during the March horse events. Be sure to book ahead if you fancy attending next season’s Cheltenham Festival – and enjoy the Regency glories of the town as well as its equine activities. Essentials The Cheltenham Festival starts on March 12 and culminates with the Gold Cup National Hunt race on March 15 ( jockeyclub.co.uk/Cheltenham/ ). Simmer sauce specifics? – simmersauce instantpot easy

What are your favorite bottled simmer sauce dinners, especially for an Instant Pot? Seeking specifics for lots of vegetables, maximum flavor with absolute minimum effort.
What are your favorite bottled simmer sauces, and what works well in them?
I would like to dump stuff into an Instant Pot and get as close as possible to restaurant food, or at least maximum deliciousness, for the least possible effort. (I am willing to chop vegetables but prefer if my garlic and ginger and stuff are already in the sauce.)
I’d like to maximize vegetables and get some protein.
I’m thinking of dumping tofu, a jar of simmer sauce, and some frozen vegetables into an Instant Pot, and I’d appreciate specific recommendations of sauces and combos you, personally, have really enjoyed.
I do most of my shopping at Trader Joe’s, but Whole Foods and Amazon are also options. I’ve seen several simmer sauces at Trader Joe’s, and I’ve seen Maya Kaimal elsewhere, and I’m sure there are others.
All cuisines are welcome – Indian, Thai, Mexican (salsas), even Italian. Meat is okay but tofu or beans are better.
Details would be great – if there are particular vegetables that go well with a sauce, or if you can include your Instant Pot times, that would all be helpful.
Thank you! posted by kristi to Food & Drink (10 answers total) 36 users Comes in envelopes, not jars, but I am partial to Saffron Road’s simmer sauces. The Moroccan is my fav. I usually throw some green and red peppers, onions, and mushrooms in.

Cooking to fame… slowly

Protima Tiwary
Amninder Sandhu is the executive chef at Arth (Mumbai and Pune), a fine dine establishment that aims to introduce diners to the oldest methods of Indian cooking. The ‘no gas’ concept followed here is much talked about. We catch up with her to understand what inspires her and makes her stand out in an industry dominated by men.
Was it a childhood dream to become a chef?
I’d be lying if I said yes. I was a fussy eater and only loved the fancy food that my mother cooked when she threw her famous parties. I’ve grown up in Assam and we’ve led a simple, unassuming life. We had our own kitchen garden and my mother would make some great dishes by innovating recipes. Her brother would take us fishing where we would cook the fresh catch over a bonfire and eat it then and there. That is when I truly realised how cool it was to actually cook. I had the inspiration, but I didn’t know I’d end up doing this as a career one day. Back then there were not too many TV shows on food, so there was not much that I knew about the industry. However, there was one show I had watched and it changed my life. There was Chef Martin Yan with his catchphrase: If Yan can cook, so can you! Did you enrol with a culinary school?
Not initially. I was a science student, going about my life. Making Maggi with scrambled eggs was the extent of my culinary prowess. But even then my friends would tell me, “No one makes Maggi and eggs like you do. You must cook more!” I was in class one day, it was third year of college and I realised I hated all of it. Yes, it really is as dramatic as it sounds. In that moment, I realised I was made to cook. I told my folks about my decision, dropped out and enrolled myself with the Taj Culinary School in Aurangabad. Were your parents supportive of your decision?
Initially, my father was a little unhappy because I had always been a good student and he wanted me to become a doctor. Now, because I had proved that I was intelligent, hard working and a go-getter, he knew he couldn’t make me change my decision and came on board.
This is a male-dominated industry. Do you agree?
Absolutely, it is. As far as challenges are concerned, I guess it’d be the fact that we still need a lot more literated minds in the kitchen. By this I mean effective leaders who have seen the workings of the industry and those who make the environments inside the kitchen more conducive. But this too is improving now. Many people are choosing culinary arts and sciences as their main profession. Earlier, we’d have people shouting at and blaming each other in the kitchens. It is changing, but is still a challenge.
You travelled across India to understand Indian cooking, and introduced us to ancient recipes through Arth. What was your idea behind it?
I wanted to introduce the world to Indian cuisine. I felt it was misinterpreted and not enough importance was given to it even in India. I wanted people to take pride in Indian cooking. I wanted the youth to be aware of our food legacy and not treat Indian food as inferior. This is why I introduced the ancient Indian slow cooking methods that do not use any gas whatsoever. We cook over hot sand, we use sigrees and angeethi in the kitchen today. I want to revive the old methods of Indian cooking.
You made your mark by being a finalist on Netflix’s Final Table. How did that feel?
After six months of interviews and auditions, I got the news that I was one of the 36 chefs who were going to LA for the show. I was among the final 24 and cannot even begin to tell you how grateful I am for this. I’ve had small beginnings and have never forgotten my roots. As I got the news, it suddenly hit me that I had come so far. I was part of a group that had some of the best the best chefs in the world!
Where do you see yourself next?
I want to write a book for sure! I want to talk about the closely guarded secrets and family recipes in Indian cooking, and want the world to become aware of the magic of our cuisine. I also want to collaborate with chefs all over the world.
