Fascinating. I noticed Chinese are fiercely nationalistic about their cuisine, but I didn’t expect it from Thais. Odd how little both Chinese and Thai think of Indian food.
Also interesting that cuisines with strong identities don’t like each other much.
I hope this diet run involves periodic sessions with a dietary expert to keep an eye on your numbers. Too many people just wing it with this shit and end up doing permanent damage. But at least it’s not a crash diet, 20 months is a pretty respectable run. I wish you the best of luck.
For some proper kickstart to your motivation, I suggest you watch a couple of movies that you should be able to find on Youtube or Netflix.
– Super Size Me . This movie is 90% utter bullcrap, but to see someone eat themselves sick on fast food is just the best demotivator – to eat fast food. I watch it once a year just for the heck of it.
– That Sugar Film . This movie is 95% truth, a really good motivator to just cut the sugar crap and never look back at it.
– Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead 1 and 2 . These movies are about juicing and doing a “system reboot”. I don’t believe in juicing, it’s a dangerous practice that is very akin to crash dieting and when done improperly can cause severe health issues. That does not take away the fact that both these movies are inspirational to see and can give lots of ideas, I love them.
It’s a good time to live in to eat well and still make it tasty, there are plenty of channels on Youtube that show easy ways to cook awesome things with veggies without having to deep fry anything. My oven has never seen more use than this year. Especially Indian and Mexican cuisine is high on my list of favorites.

Elgin International Festival, known as iFest, had it all Saturday.
An expanded international food court with dishes you might not see at any other summer festival. Music and dances from around the world, plus a picture-perfect day.
“The food vendors made incredible food,” said Kate O’Leary, Elgin’s new special events coordinator.
Volunteer Alan Thavisouk was key to bringing in more vendors, she said.
Saturday’s warm temperatures and bright skies, a break from the weeklong rainfall, drew steady crowds. Last year, about 500 people attended, O’Leary said.
People strolled around inside and around the Edward Schock Centre of Elgin enjoying live music, dance entertainment, children’s activities, camel rides, and international arts, crafts and exhibits representing Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America.
Gauri Jog’s Indian Dance School students performed traditional Indian dances and some Bollywood dances. The school has been part of iFest for a few years, Jog said.
“We love it. It’s so fun to show our culture and see others’ culture,” she said. “It’s so wonderful to share each and every country here.”
iFest had Laos, Vietnamese, Greek and Puerto Rican cuisine, along with other dishes. Indian Express, a new restaurant in Bartlett, offered samosas, which are homemade crispy Indian pastry filled with spiced green peas and potatoes, and gulab jamun, a fried dessert, owner A.J. Tantuwaya said. He opened the restaurant in December.

If I were to say, “Indian brunch”, what’s the first thing that pops into your head? Runny eggs wrapped dosa served with dahl and chutney? Fruit chaat with yogurt and saffron? Puri? What if I were to say, “ Indian cuisine inspired brunch “? What now? Runny eggs served with garam masala spiced potatoes with a side of whole wheat naan? Some sort of red curry shakshuka? If I want a meal of a certain cuisine, I’d choose what that cuisine serves for that meal; Chinese breakfast: congee and youtiao (cruller), Vietnamese breakfast: pho, American breakfast: cheeseburger and a texmex-burrito. I’m often skeptical of when restaurants do fusion – let alone for fusion breakfast. However my opinion changed when I had to the opportunity to discover what an Indian fusion brunch is all about when I visited India Rosa.
This popular Indian spot in the Plateau serving Indian Tapas has a pretty amazing brunch menu to discover. From fragrant curries, to succulent koftas and stuffed omelettes, India Rosa is appealing to brunch goers introducing brunch with an Indian twist.
The butter chicken eggs Benedict. Two poached eggs on toasted brioche, topped with butter chicken, fried onions, Brussels sprout petals, peas, sorrel shoots and romanesco. To be honest, this would have been my first image of “Indian brunch”; something with butter chicken. But ladled over eggs benny, next level! The butter chicken wasn’t spicy, but mildly sweet. The sweet peas and nutty florets made each savory bite a delight. The butter sauce when mixed wit the broken yolk was incredibly rich. The tangy, slightly acidic sorrel shoots cut though easily. The only thing that disappointed was that the butter chicken was screaming hot. If you didn’t break your yolks fast enough, the eggs would be completely cooked through rendering a poached egg into a soft-boiled egg.
Masala waffles, fried Tandoori chicken, sour curry and lime zest, drizzled with spicy honey, topped with cashew, and garnished with raw radishes, cilantro micro greens and lime.
The panko crusted chicken had great flavor and remained crunchy until the last bite. I know what waffles taste like, you know what waffles taste like, but you haven’t really eaten waffles until you had these Indian spiced waffles from India Rosa, they are amazing. The spiciness in this dish isn’t intense, but there’s a kick. The different kinds of heat (from the chicken, the waffles, to bites of raw radish) all work well together. It’s quelled and complimented by the tangy cream sauce and sharp hits of fresh lime juice and sweet honey. The dish was perfectly composed and consciously thought out and executed masterfully.
The Naan doughnuts intrigued me, so I had to have them. Deep-fried naan sticks rolled in sugar and cinnamon, then dusted in Indian 5-spice, served with maple-caramel, whipped praline cream and lime yogurt. These were tasty, I would have been just as happy to eat these without the dip. The naan was sweet and savory… delicious! The dips were a bit much for me. © India Rosa Stylish and Instagramable space for those who want to brunch for the gram, but I highly suggest you brunch for the food. Their regular menu seems fun with a bunch of dishes that look like their easy to share over Indian drinks and cocktails.
Like I said, what do you think if I were to say “Indian fusion brunch”. What hokey mish-mash of east meets west dish you’re thinking of, you’re right. But now imagine it being done deliciously and done well. Great brunch options with something for everyone – vegetarians too, they have an extensive cocktail list and exotic smoothies to enjoy as well.

Little surprise then that over the years my Mexican cooking has morphed into an Indo Mexican cuisine which my family loves. So I tried various fusion ideas blending Indian and Mexican cookery and they have been popular with our friends and family. Gratitude List – April 2019
Ram Navmi delight Us
April did bring spring this side. On the streets of Bangalore and how I felt during the month. I got a chance to be lazy, miss workout sessions, kick myself, blog little more, click pictures and keep going.
Four months of the year are now done and with summers in Bangalore, I am waiting for rains. I love watching the rains. You must have seen my Instagram posts and I was excited when the pre-monsoon showers surprised me.
As I write this and think of April, I am grateful for the month and all that it brought. In no order, here are those things that made me happy.
♥ Ragi malt. I was hungry one evening at work and wanted to pick a healthy option. This jaggery sweetened drink was refreshing and filling. I ended up buying a pack of Ragi but I need to figure out how to make this at home. Have you tried it?
♥ I tried to blog a bit more and read more. With work going heavier in the last few years I have not been able to blog like before. However, this month I made a commitment to myself. A serious one. I wrote more, shared a few travel posts and kept up with writing. I want to keep going on the journey.
♥ After I take the ride back from work with RG, I walk 20 minutes to reach home. During that span, I cross many places where I would love to stop and snack. But I don’t do that. Health is important but then some times, cheating is okay. So one day on my walk back, I stopped to have a plate of Pani Puri . It was delicious. Giving in to cravings is fun.
♥ I love the chance to eat food that’s different from my usual cuisine at home. VT and I were invited to a party where I loved the aapam and chicken stew that I had. God bless the guy who made it. I slept happy and content that night.
♥ Thinking of that party, VT and I got our first picture of the year together. As usual, VT was reluctant but the picture turned out good . Okay, I don’t track such things. But then you know how things were at the start of the year. So the day was a good one and a picture is sure a good memory to keep safe.
♥ I only worked out ten times in April. I was lazy and though I am feeling bad, it’s okay. May will be the month to pick things up . Zumba and Yoga had equal slots on my calendar and I felt good.
♥ I baked a cake after MIL asked for a recipe and the cake turned out great . That’s what I think. VT said it was just okay. Whatever. The brightest side? It was healthy. I did not use oil or butter. So I am happy and I will bake another this month too.
♥ AK invited the team to his son’s Upanayana (thread) ceremony. The lunch and the day was a good one . When I can be a part of someone’s happiness, it gives me joy. It tells me that we all need each other and no one is alone.
♥ On Ram Navmi this month, I had a lovely surprise. A lady who lives closeby, came over to give me some food that’s prepared as a part of the pooja. I loved the gesture and the fact that she thought of me . I don’t know her nor I am friends with her. We meet over usual morning greetings when I leave for work and she comes out to draw a kolam infront of her house. I felt like that was the blessing from Lord Ram.
♥ I love Pongal . Even after VU shared a recipe with me, I have been too lazy to make it on my own. This month, twice I had a chance to eat pongal and what a delight it was.
♥ Catching up with friends from far was another highlight this month. AA and SS came over to Bangalore and we met. With AA, we had some free food at Burma Burma, lunch and our usual gur wali chai. SS came over with her little girl, A and what a perfect Friday it was. We laughed and spoke like there was no tomorrow. Good friends are like that. The time between them doesn’t matter . And yes, SS got me an amazing planner and AA got me home made gujhiya and anarsa. You guys should come over more often.
♥ I watched Gully Boy this month. What a great movie ! So if you haven’t watched it, please do. A sensible one and made well.
♥ VT and I are enjoying the last season of Game of Thrones . Monday nights are reserved for that. Who are you rooting for?
♥ I am grateful to some people I don’t know who helped me restore my article on Wikipedia . After I published a biography of a notable Indian woman, a bloke from another country deleted it. I was annoyed and very much at that. Much grateful to Women In Red for all the help.
♥ Month end needs a special mention. After 41 years of teaching, it was Papa’s last working day on the 30th. Though the official date is in June, he did not have to go college after the 30th. So my brother C, VT and I decided to go home and be with parents. No big celebration and just our time . This trip was different than usual. VT accompanied me after 6 long years so my parents were happy. We chatted, ate together and spent three good days at home.
♥ Also, we flew to Lucknow and then drove to Azamgarh . Mini road trip to say. It was fun meeting so many of my folks and chatting my heart out. We had 24 hours in Lucknow. Can you believe I ended up visiting Bada Imambara, having the famous food at Tunday Kebabi, bought a kurta for myself, and met many of my folks including a cousin who I met after twenty years. On my way back, I met PS and that was lovely too. All in all, this trip will be remembered. We got lucky all along and things went better than planned. Always grateful to the universe.
We are planning our next road trip and if all goes well, we will be off to the mountains in August. Keeping fingers crossed and hoping that plans will take shape. May should be an easy month but let’s see. I am looking forward to some rains, more workouts, healthy meals, and more blogging.
