Kids eat free over Easter Holidays at Chessington’s Saffron Summer

Saffron Summer, the award-winning Indian fine dining restaurant in Chessington in Surrey, is offering free meals to children for two weeks around the Easter holidays.
All children aged 10 and under eat free when accompanied by a minimum of one paying adult. School kids choose a main dish from a special menu plus a choice of naan or rice, with an ice cream dessert to follow. Tables need to be pre booked mentioning ‘kids treat.’
The special promotion runs every day from 14 th until the 28 th April, except 21 st Easter Sunday, when Saffron Summer will stay open all afternoon to serve a special £24.95 3-course Easter menu. This will feature exquisite gourmet offerings such as Char grilled quail in bhatti spices; Keralan slow roasted beef in aromatic masala and curry leaves; stir fried calamari with chilli apricot glaze and Goan wild boar vindaloo,
“The school holidays can be an expensive time of year for parents with young children, especially those that will be visiting the nearby family attractions of Chessington World of Adventures and Thorpe Park,” said restaurateur Ralph Sousa, adding, “Many of our younger customers have discerning tastes – not all children want to eat unhealthy junk food and we want to educate young palates to the delights of authentic Indian haute cuisine.”
The restaurant led by executive head chef Awanish Roy, who previously worked at London’s renowned Cinnamon Club, was named ‘Best Newcomer’ at the Asian Curry Awards last year.
The legendary Pat Chapman, Editor of the Cobra Good Curry Guide, said when visiting Saffron Summer, “You won’t find better Indian food anywhere,” which is confirmed by its being ranked No. 1 Indian Restaurant in Surrey on the TripAdvisor reviews website*.
During National Vegetarian Week (13 th to 19 th May), Saffron Summer will be serving a special three course vegetarian menu, with optional vegan drinks pairings, for around £24.95 a head. For each one served Saffron Summer will donate £1 to the Curry for Change charity, which works to alleviate hunger in rural Africa and India.

It will be in the Northshore development, tentatively opening by the end of the year. ST. ELMO — St. Elmo Public Market announced two forthcoming tenants from Olamaie and Salt & Time. Mignette , from the Olamaie team, will be a neighborhood diner and bakery serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner (including the famous biscuits). The restaurant from Salt & Time will be similar to the original, with an added produce market. WEST SIXTH — TenTen , a Japanese restaurant with sushi and barbecue, is coming to the forthcoming Blueprint building, which will open in June. A nightclub called Mayfair is also in the works in the development, as is another location of The Goodnight. AUSTIN — Former La Barbecue pitmaster Dylan Taylor is hoping to open his own restaurant. In the meantime, he’ll offer catering services. DOWNTOWN — To replace shuttered My Name is Joe trailer, Bonhomie chef Philip Speer and Garage owner William Ball have teamed up to open a bar in the space. Though there’s no name yet, it will include a garden patio and cocktail lounge. DOWNTOWN — Adult playground Punchbowl Social announced a downtown Austin location set to open in February 2019. The menu for this location will shift towards a Tex-Mex focus. DOWNTOWN — A fifth location of Epoch Coffee is heading downtown. It will be in the Gables Park Tower Apartments, serving the same menu of coffee drinks, sandwiches, and beer and wine. MUELLER — Batch Craft Beer and Kolaches has its own brewery in the works . March 2018 Announcements Crêpeful/Facebook LAKE TRAVIS — Crêpeful is bringing Japanese crepes to Austin. DOMAIN — South Carolina-based Southern Pressed Juicery is joining forces with the new Wanderlust Yoga coming to the Domain. NORTH SHOAL CREEK — Vietnamese food truck Saigon Le Vendeur announced a brick-and-mortar restaurant, Le Bleu . The core of the menu and the extensive renovation will remain the same. EAST SIXTH — The Violet Crown location of Detroit-style pizza trailer Via 313 is leaving to make way for a brick and mortar just down the street, at the former Collide space. DOWNTOWN — New York-based customizable popsicle chain Popbar announced it will be bringing its wares to Austin. The gelato pop shop also serves drinks, and more locations are planned. MUELLER — Food truck favorite Chi’lantro is opening a sixth location in the former Pho Natic space. The restaurant should open this month. NORTH CAMPUS — Sweet shop Baked by Amy’s is opening a second location, bringing cookies, cakes, and more to an old house adjacent to the original Amy’s Ice Creams. MUELLER — Quack’s Bakery announced a second sister restaurant would be taking over the former Bribery Bakery space at Mueller. Dubbed Lady Quackenbush’s Cakery , the shop will produce custom cakes and cookies and serve coffee drinks. WINDSOR PARK — ThoughCuban Sandwich Cafe has closed, Rocco’s Pizza and Subs is rising from its ashes in a few months. FITZHUGH ROAD — Nine Banded Whiskey is opening a tasting room in the boozy corridor outside of town. The Austin-based whiskey company is helmed by the co-founder of Deep Eddy Vodka. AIRPORT — Kome’s former home is staying in the family, as Sa-Ten Coffee and Eats will be opening a second location there. CRESTVIEW — Hot chicken trailer Tumble 22 is opening a brick and mortar on Burnet Road, in the previous location of Twisted Root. The opening date and fate of the trailer are unknown. AUSTIN — Franchise Dat Dog is looking to bring creative hot dogs to Austin. There are five locations scouted for the chain (there are already 25 locations in Houston), which serves franks made from alligator, crawfish, and duck. EAST SIDE — Permits have been filed in the former East End Wines space for a restaurant called Rosewood , opening spring 2018 according to the design firm. Public House is eyeing several spots for an Austin expansion, hoping to open two locations in the city. The South Carolina-based restaurant serves barbecue, burgers, and other carnivore-friendly dishes. AUSTIN — Austin Java is closing its original North Lamar location, but opening four more around the city. WESTLAKE — Though coffee shop Trianon is unwillingly leaving its current location in the West Woods shopping center, it’s headed just down the street to 3654 Bee Caves Road. Back Lot is projected to open in November. EAST AUSTIN — The owner of Taco Flats announced an as-yet-unnamed restaurant and bar drawing on the influence of Mexico City. It will be taking over shuttered dive bar Kellee’s Place. AIRPORT — With all the renovations planned for ABIA, a bunch of new restaurants are heading to the airport. Juiceland , The Peached Tortilla , Mad Greens , Berry Austin , and Departure Lounge will make up the East Food Court, which is expected to start construction this year. LAURELWOOD — The new developments at the South Austin bar Indian Roller property include South American-focused wine bar La Passiflora , which hopes to open in the next six months. SOUTH LAMAR — Instagram fame gave HayleyCakes and Cookies a boost to open a second location on South Lamar, by Picnik and Snooze. Expecting to open in August, the new space provides growing room for the bakery with exquisite decorations. NORTH SHOAL CREEK — OneTaco expands into a second brick and mortar location, bringing breakfast, lunch, and dinner tacos to West Anderson Lane. The restaurant replaces the remaining Mighty Bird in September. ROLLINGWOOD — Summer Moon Coffee Bar , a small but quickly-growing Austin-based chain of wood-fired coffee roasting coffee shop, is taking over the Trianon space in the West Woods Shopping Center. The cafe is slated to open in February or March. DRIPPING SPRINGS — Jenson Ackles, star of Supernatural , is banding together with relatives to open a Hill Country brewery, Family Business Brewing Co. Ackles gave a preview of the beer while doing a kegstand during Comic Con, and hopes to start serving from the tap room by the end of the summer. DOWNTOWN — Yummi Joy , a candy store and ice cream shop, is coming downtown this month. The sugary haven is the result of a partnership between Toy Joy and vegan ice cream parlor Sweet Ritual (whose co-founder Amelia Raley first started serving frozen concoctions out of the original Toy Joy). SEAHOLM — Lauded San Antonio coffee shop Local is branching out to Austin. In addition to coffee, the cafe will offer fresh pastries and macarons from Bakery Lorraine, a fellow San Antonio staple. June 2017 Announcements The League/Facebook SOUTH LAMAR — Cedar Park sushi restaurant Soto will bring a new restaurant the space vacated by Cantine at the Lamar Union. Though not yet named, the menu is planned to include half the items from Soto and half new creations of sushi, noodles, fish, and the like. WINDSOR PARK — The owners of the tragically closed Henri’s Cheese Shop are bringing a yet-unnamed restaurant, bar and coffee shop to the neighborhood, expecting to serve an all-day menu in early 2018. The space will include a drive-thru and a patio. WEST — The owners of Wright Bros. Brew & Brew are expanding into a new neighborhood with Better Half . The slightly more upscale cafe and bar is expecting to open later this year, offering breakfast sandwiches, lunches, and lighter dinners, along with coffee and beer, of course. DRIFTWOOD — Opening in 2018 , Vista Brewing Co. has plans to fully utilize their 21-acre grounds. The first priority is establishing a tap room, and beer garden for their brews, with groundwork for an apiary, working farm and event space to come. EAST SIXTH — Promising Mexican flavors” Suerte is slated open next to Whisler’s this year. Behind the restaurant is Sam Hellman-Mass, one of the founding partners of Barley Swine and Odd Duck. DRIPPING SPRINGS — The League Kitchen and Tavern is planning to open a third location for its Classic American fare. The new development in the mixed-use Belterra Village joins outposts in Avery Ranch and Lakeway. The League has deep restaurant roots: Co-owners Tony Ciola and Creed Ford IV also manage Tony C’s, and Ford’s mother was president of Rudy’s Bar-B-Que (yes, the place where Arnold Schwarzenegger was spotted ). LAKELINE — The Back Porch is taking over the former Vivo Tex-Mex space at 12233 North Road to Market Road 620, Suite 104. The menu is Casual American, with wood-fired pizzas, pastas, salads, and burgers. ARBORETUM — Honest Mary’s , a fast-casual eatery focusing on healthy grain bowls, will be coming to the Arboretum in late summer. AIRPORT — Departure Lounge is closing up shop downtown and taking the cafe/bar to the airport (the travel services are moving to a location in Westlake). RAINEY STREET — BringingAmerican-Asian food to the Millennium Rainey Street building, Anthem has plans to open in the fall, serving karaage chicken sandwiches, togarashi, cocktails, and drafts from over 40 taps. SOUTH LAMAR — Krua Urban Thai will be taking over the old Barley Swine location. Chef and owner Sam Sampaotong also operates a food truck, Aroi Thai Cuisine, and is hoping for a late summer opening. May 2017 Announcements Poke Bowl/Facebook NORTH AUSTIN — Pflugerville food truck The Rolling Rooster is expanding with a brick and mortar on 13717 Burnet Road. The new restaurant will include combination plates of fried chicken, shrimp, oxtails, and more. WEST CAMPUS — Jumping on the poke bandwagon , West Campus’s new addition , Poke Bowl , will open off of Guadalupe, right next to Juiceland. A July opening is expected, with the menu full of poke bowls with squid and scallops, along with sushi and sweets. DOWNTOWN — Whisler’s new bar will join downtown’s hotbed of cocktail bars, right on Congress, near fellow drinking spot The Townsend. Scranton Twohey first opened Whisler’s and upstairs Mezcalaría Tobalá in 2013, both becoming staples in the cocktail scene ever since. There’s no further news on the opening, but thoughtfully crafted cocktails are sure to be seen on its menu. BURNET — Gourdough’s Public House closed its downtown location with anticipation of opening another location off Burnet, though the specific address isn’t released just yet. Wherever it may land, the expansion will feature a larger menu and parking lot. DOWNTOWN — Wine lovers, rejoice and pore over Texas Reds and Whites ’ tasting room and retail shop, with its upcoming opening in the downtown area, is slated for the summer. Focus will be on local wineries, breweries, and food, including snacks such as jams and salsas. The wine lineup includes Wedding Oak Winery, Bingham Family Vineyards, and Georgetown Winery, among others. RIVERSIDE — Pho-slinging chain Kim Phung River will open a Riverside location, aiming for a May opening. Along with the noodle soup, its offerings will include grilled pork buns, banh mi , and tripe. Kim Phung already has two other restaurants, one on North Lamar and the other in Cedar Park. ROUND ROCK — Pinthouse Pizza lands a new Round Rock location with pies and beer, expected in 2018. DOWNTOWN — Darna Mediterranean Cuisine spices things up in downtown, specifically off West 11th Street, this summer with its new expansion, Darna . DOWNTOWN — ATX Cocina ’s modern Mexican restaurant will soon open off San Antonio Street. ABIA — Austin-Bergstorm International Airport’s restaurant options keep expanding with new Italian restaurant concept, I Vini . The restaurant, wine bar, and market, will be located between Gates 21 and 25 starting in July. The build-out will include espresso bar, seating area, and takeaway section for jetsetters on the go. — Irvianne Torremoro March & April 2017 Announcements SOUTH CONGRESS — East side favorite Bennu Coffee is expanding into South Austin when it takes over Dominican Joe Coffee Shop next month. This second location will also open 24 hours/365 days, and feature the same caffeinated offerings, plus a similar grab-and-go selection from local partners at Hoboken Pie, Taco-Mex, Fricano’s Deli, Skull & Cakebones, and more. TBD — South Texas favorite Taco Palenque is coming to Austin this summer in the form of a food truck . Expect a menu of the fast-casual restaurant’s most popular items likely including its pirata taco (two flour tortillas with grilled fajitas, refried beans, and melted cheddar cheese), plus burritos, parrilladas, house-made tortillas, fresh salsas, and more. The truck’s location has yet to be determined. Both locations will serve as co-working spaces, with a lounge, seats, wifi, and even meeting rooms for nonprofits and community groups, all open to the public. The cafes are slated to open in the winter of 2017 or 2018. DOWNTOWN — Spin , the ping pong /restaurant/bar chain, is debuting within one of Antone’s former homes on West 5th Street this fall. The space will feature 14 tables that will be available for tournaments or casual play, plus lounges. Expect flatbread pizza, sliders, milkshakes, and sharable plates, as well as cocktails, beer, and coffee. Actress Susan Sarandon is one of the co-owners. WESTLAKE — Asian-fusion restaurant Jade is slated to open next month in the Davenport Village space that formerly housed Eleven Plates on North Capital of Texas Highway. About Priya Krishna & Indian-ish Priya Krishna grew up eating a special kind of food. Born and raised in Dallas, Texas by Indian immigrants, Priya’s mother Ritu cooked meals redolent of her Indian heritage but infused with American ingredients that made for a specific kind of fusion cuisine that Priya lovingly classifies as Indian-ish. As a food writer living in NYC in her 20’s, Priya found herself nostalgic for her mother’s uniquely delicious and simple cooking. Inspired to catalog her mother’s recipes, Priya created Indian-ish; both a cookbook and an homage to her mother, filled with all of the recipes that Ritu created after moving to the United States from India and teaching herself to cook.
Priya went home to her mother’s kitchen in Dallas to write INDIAN-ISH and observed as Ritu recreated recipes such as Roti Pizza, Tomato Rice with Crispy Cheddar, Whole Roasted Cauliflower with Green Walnut Chutney, and Indo-Malaysian Ramen. The book is truly a collaboration between mother and daughter and a unique record of the culinary creations that merged the Indian flavors of Ritu’s childhood with inspiration from PBS personalities like Martin Yan and Jacques Pepin as well as her children’s requests for American favorites like spaghetti and enchiladas. This isn’t a traditional Indian cookbook, where the pursuit of authenticity results in miles-long ingredients lists and complicated preparation. Instead, Priya and Ritu’s recipes are accessible, easy to make, and unfailingly delightful. Lively anecdotes and portraits of her family complement the recipes, as will a handful of custom illustrations by acclaimed artist Maria Qamar and photography as bright and youthful as Priya’s writing.

Permalink Gilgit-Baltistan is one of the regions in High Asia that has historically attracted travellers, preachers, soldiers, traders and writers for more than two millennia. The accounts of these travellers are recorded in the shape of travelogues, folk tales, literature, and more than 40000 rock carvings found in the region. In modern times, the increased connectivity of the region with the outside world has attracted different writers who have explored various facets of history, culture and society of Gilgit-Baltistan. Among the diverse milieu of writers, modern travel writers have played an important role in the representation of Gilgit-Baltistan, creation of perception and formation of discourse about it. However, most of these writings are bereft of academic rigour, scholarly depth and anthropological empathy. As a result, the region has become victim of discourses that spring from subjectivity or created to serve the colonial power and postcolonial interests. It results in depriving Gilgit-Baltistan of its historical connections with neighbouring regions and events in High Asia and makes the history of region subservient to the subjective definition of others. The Silk Road was a network that encompassed diverse cultures, regions, ethnicities and religions. There was not only trade of goods, but also exchange of ideas, skills, cuisine, lifestyle and religions. One of the examples of subjective pronouncements about the status of the region is the reiteration of the claim by some writers that historically the Silk Road did not exit in Gilgit-Baltistan. Recently, a writer has published an article in an English daily where he claims to debunk the myth of the Silk Road. This article is in continuation of his articles published in English dailies since 2011, in which he rejected the idea that the classical Silk Road went through the region that is now Gilgit-Baltistan including Hunza. Since then the esteemed travel writer of Pakistan is hell bent upon proving existence of the Silk Road in Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral as a myth. One can respect his opinion while disagreeing, but the derogatory tone of the writer using words and phrases like ‘pygmy’‘patent rubbish’, ‘ignorant tour operators’, calling doings of his distractors ‘the barking of dogs’, and condescending statement that he does not read anything written on the Silk Road by the average Pakistani’ smacks of imperial arrogance than the attitude of an earnest academician. This article is an ordinary attempt to debunk this subjective history that manifests orientalist mindset, which takes upon itself to define and represent “Others”, and rejects indigenous knowledge as oral rubbish. The writer’s attributing the claim of non-existence of the Silk Road in Gilgit to Dr Herald Hauptmann in an earlier article is totally false as it goes against the very research of Hauptman on Gilgit. Hauptmann in his paper ‘Pre-Islamic Heritage in the Northern Areas of Pakistan’ shows different streams of movement along different arteries of the Silk Route. Basing his historical research on rock carvings and inscriptions he states, “Gilgit, the ‘gate to India’, served as the main hub interconnecting the north-south routes from China to the Punjab with the west-east routes between Iran and Kashmir and Ladakh, via Chitral.” He further claims, “The new Karakoram Highway (KKH), opened in 1978, more or less follows one of the main old north-south connections along part of the Indus and Hunza rivers.” Also, epigraphic evidence from different parts of Gilgit-Baltistan testifies to the existence of Silk Route in the region. Historically, the Silk Road comprised different arteries connecting to main routes. Hunza, Chitral and Gilgit were one of the routes of the Silk Route. Jason Neeli’s paper ‘Hunza-Haldeikish Revisited: Epigraphical Evidence for Trans-regional History’ claims that “such networks of capillary routes connected the main arteries of the northwestern Indian subcontinent (sometimes called the Uttarapatha: ‘northern route’) with the silk routes of eastern Central Asia.” There are thousands of names of ancient travellers and dates of travel inscribed on the thousands of rocks scattered from Haldikish in Hunza to Thalpan Das in Chilas. Irmtraud Stellrecht identifies primary and secondary routes nets between Central and South Asia in Gilgit, Hunza and Chitral. Among the secondary route-nets one was the easternmost link-route that connected Hunza and Gilgit to Pamirs in Kashgar. Though the terrain of High Asia is harsh, it did not deter streams of caravans to traverse across Central and South Asia. The writings of travellers who travelled in the region almost one and half millennium ago bear testimony to connections of Gilgit, Hunza and Chitral with the Silk Road. Famous among these are descriptions of the region by Chinese travellers Fa Hsien, Songyun and Hiuen Tsang. It is an established fact that Gilgit became the fulcrum of fight between Chinese and Tibetan states to control the Silk Road in the eighth century AD. Gilgit was called little Balur at that time. The queen of Gilgit was a Tibetan princess who got married to the king in 740. There are reports that many people from Balur were part of Tibetan army. Susan Whitfield in her book Life Along the Silk Road claims, “Tibetan had established their rule over the small valley kingdoms that controlled the route between the Silk Road and the Gilgit river valley which led to northern India.” She brilliantly shows the altercation between China and Tibet in 747 with special reference to the tale of a Tibetan soldier Seg Lhaton who was defeated by Chinese in Gilgit. The Silk Road was a network that encompassed diverse cultures, regions, ethnicities and religions. There was not only trade of goods like silk, gems, brass, leather, opium, slaves, perfumery, spices etc., but also exchange of ideas, skills, cuisine, lifestyle and religions. Among the variety of exchanges, the state of Hunza was notorious for selling slaves in the markets of the Silk Road in Central Asia. German geographer, Ferdinand von Richthofen termed the whole gamut of activities and networks of trade routes the ‘Silk Road’. Perhaps it is because of the heterogeneity of activities and exchanges at the level of trade and culture that Peter Frankopan divides chapters of his recent book The Silk Roads: A New History of the World into roads of faiths, a Christian East, revolution, concord, furs, slave road, heaven, hell, death and destruction, gold, silver, Northern Europe, empire, crisis, war, black gold, compromise, wheat road, genocide, cold warfare, etc. Among the array of goods and exchanges on the Silk Road, the writer cherrypicks only silk to reject the entire history spanning over more than 1700 years. There are Chinese annals, which show a relative of Mir of Hunza delivering gold dust to the Chinese as a tribute. According to Irmtraud Stellrecht, “in reciprocity the number and quality of Chinese gifts were fixed.” According to Susan Whitfield the numbers of Chinese and Tibetan soldiers who fought the famous war of mid eighth century in Gilgit were 10000 and 9000 respectively. She provides details of how logistic arrangements were made for the armies. Given the large number of soldiers traversing the then principalities in Gilgit-Baltistan, it is wrong to assume that they did not bring silk or other merchandise of the Silk Road with them. Even the assertion of silk not being traded in Gilgit and Hunza does not hold true, if we analyse the folk tales, poetry, indigenous knowledge, culture, and more important agriculture, horticulture and livestock. In Brushashki and Shina languages raw silk is called chusi. The popular chusheay chapos (silk quilt) is made of raw silk. Silk cloth is called sikim. It was considered a precious gift, and used in royal ceremonies, public events and weddings. For silk yarn, silk worms are reared on mulberry trees. Historically, mulberry tree played a crucial role in the settlement of new villages on barren lands in Gilgit-Baltistan. When the king of a principality wanted to irrigate a barren land and settle people there, the first thing people would do is to plant a sapling of mulberry tree for three reasons. First, it provides shade from the scorching sun during summer, secondly it provides mulberry as food and, lastly, and it provides fuel wood in winters. It is probable that mulberry tree was imported from Eastern Turkistan. Old people in Hunza, Nagar and Gilgit still narrate how women used to tend silk worms to prepare silk yarn. Even if we surmise that those women from Kashgar settled in Gilgit and Hunza as brides, it still supports the claim that the region of Gilgit-Baltistan had cultural connections with major trade centres located along the Silk Route. When the cultural exchange was so extensive, it is improbable that people were not engaged in trade, however miniscule. It is possible that the practice of rearing silkworm in Gilgit disappeared with the decline of trade over the land routes of the Silk Road when the maritime trade increased phenomenally after the sixteenth century. To this day, the old routes of the trade are surviving in the border areas of Brughal and Garam Chashma in Chitral, and Chipurson in Hunza. Until now, Muslims of Xinjiang use Gilgit route for haj pilgrimage. Indeed when the Chinese started the construction of Karakoram Highway, they had clear idea that it was like rejuvenating the old Silk Road. That is why the then Chinese Premier China Zhou Enlai in 1960s discussed with Pakistan to use the port city of Karachi as a trade conduit for China and agreed with the proposal that it would help rediscover “an ancient trade route but lost to modern times, not only for trade but for strategic purposes as well.” According to historical documents, this was the genesis of Karakoram Highway (KKH). If Aga Khan Cultural Services Pakistan has erected the signboards of the old Silk Road along KKH, it did so because it can feel the pulse of history. There are rich sources in the cultural domain to substantiate the arguments in favour of existence of the old Silk Road in Gilgit. The oral folk literature is studded with exquisite poetry, which profusely uses silk (sikim) as a metaphor for refined beauty and delicacy of the beloved. Ustad Abbas Hassanabadi in his Brushashki lyric goes lyrical about the beauty of silky hair of the coquette who spread her hair like a net to captivate his heart. Jan Ali, a populist poet of Shina language, in one of his songs wishes to be hanged on the refined silky hair of his beloved for whom he has abandoned all his kith and kin. A poet from Chilas sings of his yearnings for his beloved in these verses: “Arranging silky adoration for you as bride, You will leave your abode, Jingling the silver-made necklace over thine neck, I will surrender under your doorstep, When you would have been carried as bride.” In olden times, silver and iron were meager in the region. Scarcity of these metals compelled the people to rely on raw material and sometimes skills imported from Kashgar and other areas of Xinjiang the erstwhile Eastern Turkistan and Central Asia. Even today the utensils of households include old samawars from Eastern Turkistan. Kashgar, being the hub of Silk Road, had close commercial and cultural connections with Hunza and Gilgit. These connections facilitated exchange of goods and skills typical of the Silk Route trade. For example, the first consignment of guns in Hunza was delivered from Central Asia. When the king of Hunza faced threats from British and Dogras, he hired the services of Adina Baig from Yarkand to make a cannon. Owing to scarcity of iron, the then Mir of Hunza ordered to collect every item made of iron from all over Hunza. In response, every household contributed iron in the shape of utensils and other iron items. With the help of his handyman, Adina Baig made the famous canon of Hunza in 1862, which was later used in the Anglo Hunza-Nagar war in 1891. The concept of culture not only encompasses humans but also covers animals as well. The kind of animals used in Gilgit and Hunza for travel and trade shows the nature of trade routes and commonalities with the Silk Road. Before the advent of road, packhorses, ponies, yak, camel and donkeys were used for trade on the Silk Road networks crisscrossing High Asia including Gilgit-Baltistan. Among all the animals the double humped Bactrian camel became the symbol of caravans on the Silk Road. It was the best-suited animal to navigate through rugged mountain terrain and harsh cold weather, and it can carry more than 450 kilos of load. Because of this it is called the workhorse of the Silk Roads. This animal has become part of culture and agriculture of Gilgit. As a child I still remember caravans of Bactrian camels entering Gilgit city on Karakoram Highway in the early 1980s. With the increase in traffic on KKH, the Bactrian camel disappeared from the region. The former governor of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pir Karam Ali Shah, owned the last remaining Bactrian camel, the last of which was slaughtered in 2014. The purpose of highlighting examples from the domains of culture and livestock is to show that Gilgit-Baltistan was part of the historical Silk Road. Like other spheres of life, the Silk Road has also undergone many changes. Today, the KKH has been transformed into a corridor, but it is not the end of the Silk Road; rather it’s an expansion and continuum of historical process in which regions of Inner and High Asia are experiencing expansion of local horizons into regional and global one. It is high time to critically evaluate the knowledge about Gilgit-Baltistan that is produced either to serve the powers during colonial times or by impressionist ramblers who have assumed the charge of authority about the history of the region in the postcolonial period. We are what we think. The collective cultural and historical memory testifies to the fact that the Silk Road did go through Gilgit-Baltistan. #AzizAliDad
